Just got a quote online to put my younger son on the insurance for the STS!

Four grand to put him on my policy!

It costs £600 for me on my own, and £4000 with my son, he will pass his test etc, but to insure him in it is a rediculous amount!

Goodness that's alot. Is it because of the car along with his age or just the age factor??

It's young male. The insurance companies stick it to you whenever a young male is isured. Honestly, get him a POS vehicle, and the bare minimum of coverage, leave him off the STS. My basic insurance for just me on my one old car, is more than my mother with decent coverage on her 3 cars. 95% of the reason, under 25 male. Going from 21-22 dropped my rates quite a bit though.

THe problem really is that i dont exactly want my son driving a tin can, i want some metal aroud him, and theat there Rover offers little in this way, if i oput him in a big car the insurance is beyond account.

Often people his age pay mor einsurance than the car is worth.

My other son didnt cost me this much and he was on the Cover for a Mercedes Benz C280

Basically, to insure him until he's 25 will cost you an arm, a leg, your first born son, a testicle, and 2 nights with your wife... It's extortion

Actually, McCombie, since Vovlo's are cheaper to fix over there, look at putting him in something a bit older, worth less, but solid. Keys for the ins are the cost of repair, the safety ratings, abs brakes, engine size, etc. Reducers are 4 cyl, airbags, abs brakes, sedan/wagon, alarm, him having high grades, driver safety course, lower value car.

It is, I paid the insurance for the first eyar on my older son, and his policy was for a 1.4 Rover Gta, and to be on my C280's policy, that came to £3400. Which is less than to put my younger son on the insurance of ONE car!

I hate it, not all kids are dangerous!

If possible buy him a lhd american car.

I know that sounds wierd but bear with me.

I was paying £1,200pa wen I was 24 for a 1.8L Ford Focus

I sold that and bought a 1988 5.7L IROC Camaro (LHD) and paid £549.
On the STS I pay £942 and they told me outright that if I had imported a LHD one from the USA the insurance would be half that.

It's wierd, but basically if you drive a LHD car and are a member of a car club they realise you care about your car and won't park it anywhere dodgy, or driver like an idiot, and LHD cars don't often get stolen.

However, being a new driver it can be difficult to get insurance full stop. But a friend of mine who's 19 was paying £1,800 on his 1.8L Focus has just bought a 1975 LHD 6.0L Ford pickup truck and is only paying £680.

Try a LHD car through Adrian Flux, MCE or any other company who advertises in Classic American magazine. Only a couple of them will entertain young drivers though, Adrian Flux being your best bet. They will ask if he has experience of LHD cars, so tell them he drives one of yours .

It will always be very high for a young driver who just passed his test, my best mates little sister had to pay £3,200 to insure her brand new 1.4L Peugeot 106 when she passed her test.

This is the reason you see lots of 18 year olds in brand new Fiestas and Saxos. The free insurance offer. To them it's worth thousands.

Holy Crap!! I only have to pay $450 for my insurance, every 6 months, and I've been paying that much since I was 16.
I went to drivers Ed, and I think that reduced it a lot. Maybe you should send your son to drivers ed? Does the insurance company give discont benefits for that kinda stuff, like over here?

Wish I'd never sold that Eldorado now.

My wife has a 1999 Sedan Deville on its way to her, maybe that?

I would rather he was in a car with a manual box as his first, but im sure he wouldnt argue with driving a Cadillac to college!

The issue i have is, most young lads care about their cars! I know my other son and his pals certainly did too.

It cost me change to insure a Jaguar E-Type back in 1974, and then a brand new 2.0 Cortina was even less!

It really isn't fair.

A lot of young lads who drive old bangers do drive like idiots.
Some young lads who drive brand new cars can drive like idiots.

But, by and large, the ones who drive new or nearly new hatches with expensive, wheels, boydkits, paintjobs and sound systems won't risk their car and drive sensibly most of the time.

But they get penalised for the actions of others.

The world is run for, and judged on, Joe Average.

Unfortunatly.
