Stock OEM WHEELS, Polished AL with chrome inserts

In November 2018 I purchased a 2014 XTS Platinum turbo with 20 inch wheels. Only 29 000 miles. The wheel finish appears Smokey and not shiny. Is this a normal finish or has the clear coat finish been abused with improper care, causing it to appear darker than the polished surface I had on my 2005 STS. Wheel pictures on line appear to be almost chrome-like.

Depending on the level of oxidation, your wheels could get worse. The Platinum chrome insert wheels have a high rate of corrosion caused by dissimilar metals in contact, leading to etching that cannot be removed by hand. Gapping the chrome inserts by .05" solves the problem. If caught early enough under warranty, most dealers will replace the wheels.

Thx for the thoughts, but how can there be oxidation of the AL when the polished surface has been clear coated. However, maybe I am mistaken that the polished AL has been clear coated.

A clear-coated, polished wheel should remain shiny when cleaned. The fact that yours aren't would indicate worn or missing clear-coating. A trip to a wheel refinishing shop can get you an expert opinion.

The oxidation I referred to is caused by metal to metal contact, creating galvanic corrosion, characterized by thick, oxidized spiderwebs that migrate from the contact point to the edge of the wheel. YMMV.

Cadillac polished wheels have a brushed look with clear coat, at least that is the way mine are (as well as all the others I have seen.) By the way, look at the trim on the trunk, top of the front hood, and side window surround, etc. TBW
