XLR Tops that Fly off while driving!

There have been several reports of XLR Tops flying off while driving--sometimes at highway speeds. Evidently there's a failure of the adhesive. Last I heard on the news, Cadillac was "considering" whether to have a recall. Has anyone any news of this?

While I'm at it, has Cadillac ever addressed the dangerous melting and burning that happens on the XLR driving lights?

    Thanks!

These are great cars, but they really do deserve some support for GM.

A new headlight wiring harness adapter was added for compatibility with the AFL-equipped 06's and later to the 04-06's when the DRL crazing issue was first noticed and owners were having their headlights replaced in droves under warranty, The crazing issue, (they aren't melting outright; it's more of a cosmetic issue than anything else; otherwise there would have been a safety recall) was resolved by using a new bezel material.

The top de-bonding issue has been ongoing for several years now. It isn't widespread, but it sucks if it happens to you, or the person behind you. Maybe GM is waiting for someone to die before a decision is made as to what to do about it. Until a definitive resolution from Cadillac is issued, it's prudent to periodically check the leading edge of the SMC material for any cracks, or whistling noises from the windshield header when driving. When the warranty period for mandatory supply parts being stocked ended, so did GM's interest in the car. It is what it is.

    ccclarke,

Can you elaborate on the headlight comments you made?
What does a wiring harness have to do with the lens deterioration?
    What is AFL?
Any idea where one can source the new bezel material you mention? I have an 05 with headlight cataracts and would like to find a (relatively) inexpensive solution.

As to the tops issue. See NHTSA letter to GM here:

Thought my previous post covered this . . . so I'll try to be more informative.

New/improved headlights were issued in 2006. AFL (Adaptive forward Lighting) was added that year. For backwards compatibility, a new harness was supplied. I had both of my headlights replaced (along with many, many others) under warranty when the bezels began crazing.

There have been NO headlights, (or taillights for that matter) in the GM supply system for years. Damage one, and your insurance company will total the vehicle. Insurance companies do not replace damaged components with used parts, which are the only source of lighting if you need one. Be prepared to pay through the nose as they cost thousands of dollars now. Avoid any headlights prior to 2007 on eBay as they're usually older models with damage that conveniently doesn't show up in pictures. You'll need a wiring chart to ensure compatibility with the newer lights.

Every now and then someone pops up online claiming to be able to replace the bezels, but they quickly disappear. Google away for headlight repair. YMMV.
