    SRX air filter replacement

Had my oil and air filter replaced today at Valvoline, I noticed the old air filter had a foam pad on the underside and the one they put in did not. Any concern with this? Also I noticed the engine sounded slightly different after the change, almost sounded more throatier under heavy acceleration only and I definitely noticed a pretty good bump in fuel economy.

The OEM one does have the foam, it's kind of a pre-filter. Most aftermarket ones do not.

They have proven that a dirty air filter does not reduce gas mileage on an EFI car, as the computer compensates for any reduced air flow, if there is any.

Without the foam unfiltered air may be getting into the intake

Confirmed, still basically same mileage after the calculations settled down. That throaty noise when you hard accelerate bugs me though, almost sounds like back in the 80's when flipping over your air filter lid was the thing to make your car sound cooler. Took it back to the oil change place and they confirmed the air box was closed up properly, but that noise persists.
