06 Trailing Arm: RUSTS itself OUT OF EXISTENCE.

Put the car in reverse yesterday to back out of the driveway... clunk. Then scraping sound.

Behold - 12 year old GM product turning into powder: This is what remains of the left rear trailing arm of my 2006 srx.

    - do all 06's look this sh1tty, or is it just me?
    - anyone replace their trailing arms for the same reason?

This is the reason I got rid of my 04 a couple years ago. Loved that vehicle but it scared me everytime I looked under it!!!

    Common in snow/rust belt areas.

Here's a slightly older Seville up on the rack for exhaust replacement - note the rust on the arms and suspension cradle (Deville is worse, much worse - some horror stories similar to yours in those forums).

Mine is an '04 in the salt belt. Nothing as bad as yours just some surface rust. I did have a hole in the front rail - nothing serious but I had new metal welded in and the undercarriage sprayed with rust converting paint. The car sub shows looks like simple surface rust not bad at all, but yours is really bad...sorry for that to happen. I get undercarriage washes a number of times in winter and about every two weeks spring to beginning of winter.

My 2006 STS has the same frame rail rust as you. I need to have a piece welded in as well.
The rest of the undercarriage isn't bad.

Well the good news is it didn't happen when you were horsing it at 50mph on a 25mph freeway ramp.

The factory paint on those parts (from a supplier I assume) is pretty inconsistent and you for sure got one that was thin/missed. Now I'm gonna go out and look at the ones on my 99 GMC.

I'm told they rust there because of a resin fill which is supposed to make the frame stronger ...how rusting makes it stronger is something I can't figure out, lol.

They rust cuz they're made from the sh1ttiest cheapest mild steel known to mankind.

Now might be a good time to point out that Tesla's suspension is aluminum.

In your before pictures, you have some flaky surface rust. Did all that get scrapped off before painting? And you said "rust converting paint" - is there some magical unicorn rust paint I am not aware of?

There was no flaking rust except for the part of the frame where the hole was. No sanding/scraping. Guess you'll have to find your own magical unicorn.

Yes, the underbodies, suspension parts, and frames are stamped from the cheapest, worst kind of "steel" on the planet - usually with NO paint or primer job applied.

There are several "rust converter" coatings that contain resins and tannins. They stop the rust process and coat/impregnate the rusted areas with a hard waxy brown material. They DO NOT restore any lost steel strength or integrity.

If you buy a car in the rust belt then there's still some small incentive for a Ziebart job - while the car is new.

I assume you're joking here, if not search on "whompy wheels"
Teslas have widespread suspension failures, far more per capita than any other vehicle on the road.

I guess frame rail rust is endemic then. Googling frame rail rust comes up with bad frame rail rust on models of Toyota such as the Tacoma, along with many other brands such as Mitsubishi, Mazda, Miata, Nissan, Chrysler, Jeep, Ford, and the list goes on.

Re: 06 Trailing Arm: RUSTS itself OUT OF EXISTENCE.

Back in the late 50s, when "Nissan" was "Datsun", you could guarantee that it would start to rust out - rust OUT - in less than 12 months.

I was a part-time engine mechanic at McLean Motors in Georgetown, DC back then - the first Datsun dealer in the middle east coast. Hillman, MG, Jaguar, Austin Healey, Morgan, others. Fun times. Before USN ........

Look up mid-60s GM mid-size car rust under the rear window corners - guaranteed automatic drains into the trunk.
