Going to look at a 2003 STS

Going to look at a 2003 STS later this morning. Fair body, looks like a 10 interior. Has a LCD screen. I know my 1998 Eldo pretty good. Anything specific to zero in on with this one? 72,000 miles $2200 on for sale sign. Haven't logged on in a while. Thanks

    Re: 2003 sts

Hi Kent, good to hear from you again. Hope all is well.

The only thing I can think of on the '03 is to look for the rather common P0741 code and coolant leaks on the crossover manifold, usually on the firewall side.

Re: Going to look at a 2003 STS

    Hi Ranger
Met the Dad. This is a family car. Uncle bought it new, gave it to the wife down the road. Aunt gave it to the Dad's 16 year old son for a birthday gift. Kid's 22 now and another relative gave him a newer car so that is the reason for the sale. Dad is a cop in Algonquin. They live about a mile from me. Vehicle has about 7 dents like a golf ball hit . RR wheel well was damaged 6 years ago and not repaired. 8 inches of severe edge rust and bubbling paint. the rest of the body and paint look virgin but not detailed. Interior is a 10. Drove it and it needs shocks/struts. Needs brakes. Steering seemed tight but when i started it up the power steering pump was really whining. Quieted down after a while. Oil was clean. Check coolant level came on several times but then did not reappear. Not a long ride but gage went to correct spot. Wot seemed good but didn't feel/sound as raw as my 98 Eldo. Said the RR window won't come up if put down and the part has to be oem.$600-$700. Has the LCD screen. Said if interested and it wasn't sold I could take it to check it out. I brought that up because I would want to get it up in the air. I'm just playing but maybe not. Thanks Ranger. Any imput from anyone with this additional info?

Re: Going to look at a 2003 STS

after reading your entire post - you need to buy this car REALLY - REALLY - REALLY CHEAP -

between the rusted out quarter panel and the 7 golfball size dents -
you're looking at $2500+ in body work -

Drove it and it needs shocks/struts
that is going to be EXPENSIVE - the STS has the electronic - F55 - MagnaRide suspension -

    SHOCKS -
    ACDELCO 580-1047 - LEFT - and - ACDELCO 580-1048 - RIGHT -
    ROCKAUTO.COM has the best price - $770 - for the pair - plus $10 for shipping = $780 -

    STRUTS -
    ACDELCO 580-462 -
    ROCKAUTO.COM has the best price - $1116 - for the pair - plus $12 for shipping = $1128 -

these prices don NOT include any labor or the alignment -

    ==============================

YES - there IS an alternative -
go with the non-electronic shocks and struts -
same as those used on the SLS model -

    SHOCKS -
    MONROE MA822 - $57.35 - for the PAIR - with FREE shipping -
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...=ATVPDKIKX0DER

STRUTS - there are a couple more choices -
    bare strut -
    MONROE 71684 - $44 - each - with free shipping -
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...=ATVPDKIKX0DER

Quick Strut - fully assembled with ALL new parts/pieces -
    MONROE 171684 - $220 - for the pair - plus $24 shipping = $244 -

NOTE - there is a LOT less labor when using the Quick struts compared to the bare struts -

YES - you will need a set of 4 resistors - around $10 - installed to satisfy the suspension computer -

    -------------------------

    Needs brakes.
    FRONT PADS -
    ACDELCO 17D699CH - $42.30 - with free shipping -
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...=ATVPDKIKX0DER

    REAR PADS -
    ACDELCO 17D714CH - $36.60 - with free shipping -

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...=ATVPDKIKX0DER

find the rotors locally due to the expense of shipping -

    -------------------------
Said the RR window won't come up if put down
and the part has to be oem.$600-$700.

    RR regulator with motor -

    ACDELCO 25719488 - $276 - plus $7 shipping = $283 -
ROCKAUTO.COM has the best price -

    OR -
    ACI 382349 - $79 - plus $8 shipping = $87 -

WHY does it have to be an OEM part?
    WHO came up with $600-$700?
    ----------------------------------

    Has the LCD screen.
the navagation system is almost totally useless -
the NEWEST available maps are obsolite from 2008 - and will NEVER be updated from there -

    NOTE -
there is a button battery within the BOSE nav radio -
WHEN it goes dead - and power is removed from the car - the entire radio looses its software -
if you don't have the software disc to reinstall the programming - the radio will never play again -

    ==================================

these old Cadillacs are cheap to buy and VERY expensive to maintain -

if you really want a Seville -
    I would find one with a straight - rust-free body -

parts can be replaced - but you just can't fix rust -

Re: Going to look at a 2003 STS

    WALK !!!

It's a money pit - the struts and shocks alone (Magnetic Ride Control system) will set you back over $2300, including the mounts and strut bearings, not including repairs to the electronic level control system.

As-is the car is not worth <$500. Maybe get $2000 back if you parted it out.

basscatt hit the nail on the head - lotsa work and bucks to restore the car.

If it looked like this with NO problems/repairs needed, no NAV, updated OnStar, then you could go $2500.

Had a password issue, got it straightened out. Belated thanks to everyone for responses. I figured that was going to be the call but it's nice to confirm with the Big Dogs.
