    AC conversion

Is it worth it to convert the AC on my 89 Eldorado or buy R12 off eBay and refill it with original type Freon. Consider that I don’t know if it leaks. It sat for 5 years before I bought it so I won’t know until I fill it with something. I’m Leary if taking it to a mechanic to diagnose it because I routinely feel like I’m getting ripped off.

    Re: AC conversion

Your call - R12 is scary expensive. R134a gives a bit less cooling capability but the entire conversion would probably be considerably less $$$.$$ in the long run than troubleshooting/recharging the old system.

    Re: AC conversion

I’m leaning toward converting. A mechanic told me (for free) that the car will only need about 3/4th as much new Freon as old and so therefore the information center will always display the “low coolant” message. Is that right?

No. The pressure curves for 134 are higher than 12, so the sensors will be pleased.

    Re: AC conversion

R12 prices have fallen tremendously from their peak. There is virtually no demand for it anymore.

In the best case a "conversion" amounts to someone changing the dryer, all O-rings, completely flushing the rest of the system, putting pag oil in, pressure testing for leaks and then being left on a vacuum machine overnight. Worst case ends up with an a-dapter kit on the high and low sides, and a shot of ester oil & dye. In any case you end up with reduced performance, which might be ok where you live...but if you like to be cold while you sit in traffic it's not for you.

If it were mine, I'd spend the money and stay cool. Your call though!

Converted my 91 Toyota Celica and 92 Fleetwood. Fleetwood conversion is great. Celica runs noticeably warmer than r12.
