Premium or unleaded for our ELRs from years of your experience?

I think I read something along this line on some previous threads in the beginning but nothing is popping up in the search engine. Seemed like almost a religious war on this matter...

Conventionally some engines must have it, hard on the engine components supposedly if you don't run premium, others you just get less performance, engine electronics will relearn the lesser fuel's explosive capability.

The manual states premium, but then again if it's just charging a battery, how can it be really be a thing?

I've gone over 1000 miles now in the month I've had my new toy just doing errands! Still on my first tank of gas that came from the dealer. I'll have to get gas here in the next few weeks I would imagine. I would like to know if any of you long term users have now made any definable moments in wisdom regarding this? Excuse me if this is a beat question... stirring the pot of opinion here...

It's a shelf life thing... premium's is longer.
The gas sits in many EREVs for quite while.

These things don't use much gas, so the difference between regular and premium is not big bucks.

Main reason is efficiency - up to 10% difference in MPG when running in range extender mode. Call it 3 MPG. Yes the computer will compensate to a degree, but this is a high compression engine which should be fed accordingly.

Lots of info on the web about this. Look for info regarding the 1st generation Volt which has the same limitation (and same Voltec engine as the ELR). One example below...

    https://gm-volt.com/forum/archive/in...p/t-11648.html

2nd generation Volts got rid of the requirement for premium fuel. ELR never got a 2nd gen, just a minor refresh for 2016.

Thanks guys - and some good reading. I'm not a mechanic so when they're getting into the Atkinson cycle thing that's gonna be over my head. I don't mind paying for premium, but on some rigs like my Dodge Promaster van, Premium did nothing. I love all things efficient so I'll probably just always run premium and get the benefit of the cleaners within the better fuels too. From what I'm seeing myself doing with the ELR here in my semi-retirement, I think a tank will last me 2 to 4 months, much to the disdain of OPEC

Volts / ELRs aren't Atkinson cycle engines (like a Prius).
They run a sort of "fake" Atkinson cycle using cam timing.

    Bottom line... use premium.

Yeah I decided to go see my Mom last night and that's a 100 mile journey so I filled up with Premium and did the trip on half gas. It did seem to run smoother than whatever the crap the dealership put in it.... Premium it is gentlemen. Nice knowing that it's not even 10 gallons on a full guzzling fillup to make her full and go long distance!
