Anyone put custom wheels on their ELR?

Hello, wondering if anyone took the plunge and bought different wheels for their ELR? While I like the stock ones, I really have been into black wheels ever since I bought my wife a FPace-S and it's black 5 blade spoke wheels. I would love to get some 7 spoke gloss black wheels for the ELR.

Or maybe powder coat the ELR wheels. I'm kinda scared to powder coat though, as I have seen a coatings not adhere properly to aluminum and peel off. I have some aluminum pieces on hobbie stuff that you cannot get off, and other pieces where it came off super easy. So there's a real trick to getting powder right. I would assume that you cannot vinyl wrap the ELR wheels with all their little line curves.

Would love to see some pics of owners with different wheels....

There was someone on here that did a set on their ELR. I think they were on the Volt forum, as well. A dished twisted spoke, and it looked REALLY good.

<edit> Found it. Googled "ELR custom wheels", there are a bunch for you to look at, including the black you're thinking about.

I only recall one thread here from a few years back (different from the pics above), where an owner of a black ELR (I think?) replaced the stock wheels. He also posted several pics and info on the wheels, if I recall. A forum search should turn up the old thread for you to review.

As for me, I'm sticking with the wheels that came with my ELR. I really like the unique design and appreciate the subtle darkened paint on the inner sections of the version that came with the Luxury package upgrade.

You might consider Plasti-Dip which is removable and can be flat or glossy. I did the grill on my car and discovered a side-benefit--bugs and other stuff don't stick to it. Check YouTube. There are tons of videos on the subject.

yeah both those shots look awesome. I of course as stated like black wheels so I'm going to pick the bottom pic. That's a really great look. I was thinking something not so hip-hop caar show/rubber so thin it affects ride quality. So I would stick with the stock 20" wheel size. I found the stock wheel on ebay powder coated black, as well as the wheel style I was looking for - a 7-spoke black with not to thin of spoke.

I'd like to know what you ELR owners think

I can't bear the thought of plastic dip, I would think the second someone air ratcheted the lugnuts on the coating could get ripped... I just dunno about that stuff. The grill maybe, that's a different story.

You don't coat the lugnuts. Plasti Dip is an easy way to test a different look without spending a bunch of $$. If you don't like it, remove and try something else. If you do like it, you can do something more permanent.

Yeah what I meant was, it would seem like once you took the undipped lug nuts and tried to screw them onto a dipped wheel along with big socket, it would seem like the force of the rotating lugnut would just rip the coating off...

I still would like to know what forum members thought of the difference between the two wheels I posted. The non-factory one is 7 spoke too. They're close in looks to me. After reading a few more past posts, it looks like the stock wheels were available in black. I wonder if they just came that way or did the dealer order them that way or what? I know at some point I will getting black wheels for sure...

Cadillac offered black rims from the factory, at last for the '16's. Same design as the silver rims. Here is mine: MVIMG_20181116_152850 resize.jpg

Nice pic. Yeah I need black for sure. I am confused though... I don't have my car yet so I don't know the wheel size but I thought they were all 20"s. So 16" is the stock size and the pics of all the ELR's I see? If I get new wheels down the road, I definitely would not get bigger rims, I want the best ride quality I can get. Been there done that....

My apologies, sir. I was simply trying to suggest an inexpensive (and removable) way to test the look you want before spending a bunch of money on new wheels, etc. Despite the name, it is a spray on coating, not a liquid dip. I'll refrain from further suggestions.

Sweet!! Thats exactly the look I'm going for! My CTS has the 19's OEM black on Steller black and it looks sick, like that! That is exactly the car I want to get with Kona seats.

Re: Anyone put custom wheels on their ELR?

Currently I am having a hard time finding wheels available for the ELR. As I posted above I really want the Morder 007 wheel in black. I went to Les Schwab and they said they haven't even heard of that brand and gave me 4 brands with their sub-brands to look at. That was a waste of time as nothing was available or I didn't like any of the designs. Honestly I can't even believe that people can even buy 99% of the wheels out there they are so fugly. The ELR wheels are definitely a good looking wheel, I just have to have black and wanted a wheel with a little more depth to it.

The ebay store (AudiocityUSA) that features the Morder wheel of course states that they can deliver those things to you in 5 days...yeah right so I called and it took some guy 15 minutes to tell me they are out of stock. But he did say that a container would be in within 3 weeks with them. I don't believe it but when he said China I went - uhhh - crap. Then he said "all wheels are made in China". I knew that was BS but I'm sure he's right to a certain degree. I do know that Ford and BMW use Chinese wheels for some of their cars.

So, armed with the dark news that my wheels would most likely be made in China I researched that issue. It kinda hit me fast with the cost. The wheels I want and many just like them are going for about $1000 a set. I just thought it was a good deal. Nope, it's because they're made in China. I should have known better. Basically from all the wheels I've ever bought I thought about it and it makes sense that any American wheel is going to be 2 to 4 times more, which is what I've paid for all my other wheels (around $1700 to $2500 a set). Obviously there's wheels that are very costly especially when you go up in size. Then I read about all the counterfeit wheels made in China. They look just like the real ones. The examples shown showed how they try and fool you. If your wheel was a BBS-1234, they would put BB5-1234. That 5 is hard to see and notice, and then it's done in rough casting so it's even harder to see the difference between a S and a 5.

Then there was the website that showed what happens when you put on counterfeit (I think they were trying to say Chinese but didn't want to come right out and say it) wheels and then hit potholes. They showed this low profile rim hitting a pothole in slow motion at speed and you get to see the front part of the rim snap and go flying off! Of course the thin rubber of this type of wheel style isn't helping but it was to show that casting quality is an issue. And of course, if you're buying off brand or Chinese wheels, but a fifth just in case.

I'm going to keep checking back and see if they actually do get my wheel in. I'm not too worried about rim damage the 20" wheel isn't too low of profile. And I will buy a fifth just in case. At just $1250 for 5 wheels I guess that's not much money to take a risk on as compared to a lot more if they were American made. Of course I would gladly pay the extra if they were available in this country.

Loomis2, if you're monitoring the forum, I was wondering if you went ahead and got the black caps with the colored Cadillac emblem in the center from the GM parts store? I can't tell if they're colored or not from your picture. The cheapest I can find is off ebay for a little over $38 apiece for a little plastic part...ouch - talk about pricey!

I got my gloss black ELR wheels now from Detroit tire and wheel. They look awesome. However I was waiting to get the wheels on and then decide what to do about the center cap. I didn't know whether I wanted to try and get the silver stock ones dipped or wrapped and have the center uncolored Cad logo showing, or just getting the pricey black smaller cap and have the lugs showing. Well my wife says she thinks I should go with the black smaller cap.

Obviously I didn't think it through and realize I'm going to need some all black lug nuts too with cap so you can't see the lugs, as in Loomis2's pic... I guess I'm on the hunt this morning!

It's freaking driving me crazy with no caps!!! I sure like the car way better with the black wheels, it looks so much sinister Batman now... wife likes it way better too. One thing that I've noticed is that the pics make the wheels look a little smaller than they actually are, at least to my eyes. We need some more pics taken without the wide angle lenses everyone uses on the cell phones.
