Yikes! That's a long time to wait. Good luck.

Have you tried calling your Cadillac dealer to see if they could possibly get it any faster?

Re: Left rear quarter panel damaged

Cadillac finally gave info that they probably will not make a replacement. They also require / recommend to body shop not to used salvaged panels, hem from elr The insurance now is Totaling the car because of the back panel. Now have to argue with their ins to give enough money to get another one. w KONA, Adaptive Cruise, Luxury. Not many is US. I think I will probably pay little extra and get a 2016. Frustrating since they ve had car since January 2.

Yikes!!! That sucks! I sure hope that you achieve success in whatever direction you're going. Good to know about body panel anxiety - if I ever get clobbered I'll at least know the machinations of both GM and the insurance company

This is my biggest fear with my ELR realized even sooner than I thought. I figured it would be another couple of years (or maybe next year) before they stopped producing parts for the car.

I'd buy the totalled car if one of the below is feasible.
I'd talk to a restorer to see if it was at all possible to repair it. If not, I'd try to find a junkyard part. If not, then let it go.

IMO, these things need to be treated as if they're a rare classic, even though they're only 5 years old.
As the owner an original mint condition Merkur XR4Ti, I'm quite familiar with "unicorn" parts.

It may very well be much easier to get parts years from now than today.
With Merkurs, many cars ended up in the hands of a couple of specialists that supply parts to current owners today.
They even reproduce some of the hard to get parts.
Modified XR4Tis are not extremely rare, but there are only about a dozen really good original cars. We know where they are.

Getting Merkur parts in 2019 is an entirely different situation than it was in the '90's. You couldn't get squat in the '90's.
I owned my first Merkur through nearly the entirety of the '90's. It got interesting from time to time. Expect this.
So be patient, hang on and keep the faith... and have something else to drive. I had an old Chevy 4x4 pickup because Merkurs sucked in winter.

This situation is to be expected on a low-volume automobile. Because so few ELRs are out there, and fewer ELR owners are members here, the chances of one of them reporting their experience after an accident is even less (since most people rarely are involved in collisions.) But it's perfectly normal for an insurance company to total a car for even a minor part, since they don't pay for used parts. At some point in the very near future, ELR-specific head and tail light stock will be depleted and you'll see outrageous prices (like $5k ea. in the case of the XLR) being demanded for them on online sites for used parts. When ELR-specific parts dry up, (as mentioned in Post #7) an ELR won't be ideal as a daily driver if it's the only vehicle you can afford to own.

For this same reason, a lot of die-hard XLR owners have moved on, selling their cars to unsuspecting buyers who fall for the looks but are clueless regarding lack of support for seemingly common parts that easily require the vehicle to be totaled.

It's the seemingly innocuous parts that can take you down. A couple of XR4Ti examples:

Now you would think a master cylinder wouldn't be a big deal. It is.
This is the first NOS one I've even seen for sale. Expensive, but I'm surprised no has snapped it up.

    This is The One.
Unobtainium in new condition because they made few XR4Tis with cruise.
100% failure rate... it's just a matter of time. When it goes you have no turn signals.
I have two working examples in my possession and they are not for sale. The one on the car today seems more robust than most.

I am grateful for the two specialists that are offering the parts I linked.
They're in business to make money, but their secondary mission is keeping Merkurs on the road and out of the junkyard.

Hopefully at some time in the future, someone decides that keeping ELRs (and XLRs) on the road is just as important.

    "Unobtainium" - funny stuff...

Just for poops and giggles I went to the GM parts store and wanted to know if ELR lights were listed. They currently are, but who knows if that's actually true... Anyway, front light assembly - $1500 and rear tail light assembly $608. Better than NO assembly.... I guess if that front light is full of special LED lights, I can see the cost.

That's actually not a ripoff price.
We were looking at a CPO Infiniti QX30, a far less expensive car.
Some moisture had gotten into those fancy lights and the replacement cost was listed right on the checkist... almost $2800.

New XLR lights sold for a similar amount. (Used) XLR head and tail lights have been sold for $5k. When the current supply of ELR lights is depleted, stand by. . . You can't (legally) drive a car without working lights, so people will pay whatever it takes to keep their cars on the road.
