    timing issue

I have replaced the distributor with a new one, complete. I now have the timing set with a light to 12 DBTDC and it runs well, idle is about 750. Problem is when I shut it off, it will not start until I turn the distributor about 20 drees retarded and them slowly bring it to 12 again. This is with the wires in the obd reader port joined to enter timing mode,
Seems I am doing it right but I cannot figure out why the timing needs to be moved to start it, is there something electrical that Should be doing it for me?

    Re: timing issue

The Aldl is jumped correct, I spent a couple hours timing it by ear at 750rpm and kept trying to start it. Other than set at about 30 degrees retard, it will not start, it runs good at this in the garage, have not driven it yet or pulled the jumper out to see where the timing ends up. I am wondering if I put the new distributor in one tooth out of place? Would that show it off that much but still run good?

    Re: timing issue

No once you set it you have to remove the jumper wire or it will stay in base timing mode. with the jumper removed the timing can be checked thru the on board diagnostics usually reads 25 btc. ecm data will get you to the timing reading.

    Re: timing issue

Problem found! The new distributor failed. The cam position sensor, also known as the hall effects sensor died with only a couple hours on the distributor. I found the test procedure in the shop manual and it was easy to find it was not working. I ordered another distributor and installed it. Set the timing to 10 DBTC with the pins jumped next to the brake pedal, pulled them out and it runs fine. So if you can seem to time your engine and it will only run about 30 degrees out, check the cam sensor in the distributor using a volt meter.
