    Bent valve on '97 Catera

I was on my way to work Monday and I had the cruise control on 70 when I noticed something didn't feel right. so I turned off the C.C. and gave it gas and it felt like it was missing....then the check engine light comes on. So I had it towed to a Caddy dealer. Wednesday I get a call and the mechanic says it's going to cost $70 just to bring it into the shop. Later he calls back and says he thinks the timing might have jumped and a valve bent and it would cost a total of $370 to diagnose what the problem is. As of Friday they still didn't find out what it is so I'm having it towed somewhere else. The car only has 99,000 miles. What would cause the timing to "jump".
