Quick question. My uncle has a 96 sedan deVille and went into a shop that said he needed new struts. They said for this year car, the only struts that can be used are Delco which run approx $900 a pop. I highly doubt this and find the shop he went to a bunch of crooks.
Does anyone know about the 96 sedan deville and the suspension setup and if any others can be used like KGB, Konigs, etc?
You can get an idea of OEM parts prices from the guys at Brasington Cadillac - Saab in Florida. Call 352-378-5301 and have the VIN in front of you. Tell the parts counter guys you are asking for their web pricing.
If the car was built with electrically adjustable struts and that is what you want to go with, the price will be a little bit of a shock (pun intended).
You can substitute non-electric struts that are spec'd. for a similar model year car without the electric feature, but that involves fooling the ride control module into thinking there really are electric struts installed. Not difficult to do, but it is required to avoid the SERVICE RIDE CONTROL (or whatever the text is on that model) message.
Look up companies like Arnott, Boston suspension, and Strutmasters (I know there are more, just can't think of them right now...)... They all sell passive replacements... The thing is that they usually don't supply the correct electronics to get rid of the SRC message. What they usually supply is a 12ohm power resistor, which works on the CVRSS system that was implemented in 1997, and the resistor also works on the cars that have the 4.9 engine. Since yours is a 96, the resistor wont work because the module measures the inductive frequency of the dampering valve, so you would need an inductive (electromagnetic) coil that puts out that frequency to get rid of the message.
You should remove the dampering valves from the old shocks/struts and reuse them. It's not that hard to get them off, just take a large adjustable wrench to it and it unscrews. The dampering valves are the things protruding from the side of each shock/strut.
When you get them off, make sure you weatherproof them really good before plugging them back in and tieing them off in an out of the way place. Once their in there, the RSS module will think you still have the OEM shocks/struts and it wont put the message up.
Once the dampering valves are taken off of the shocks/struts they will be leaking hydrolic fluid, be careful because it is very hard to get that smell out of fabrics (I know from experience. LOL).
