    '06 STS Brake Squeal

I have 2,700 miles on my "high Performance" brake pads (part of the PHP). Since day one (seven weeks ago) my brakes have squealed softly at very low (walking) speeds at very low pedal pressures, typically during the last few feet of coming to rest at a STOP sign. I and others have posted similar complaints on the STS forum. I just found this brakes forum and am posting the matter here, as well.

My dealer (Stewart Cadillac in Colma, CA) told me that there's a TSB on brake squeal advising that I get used to it. Anyone have any comments or suggestions?

Due to the compund needed for a "high performance" brake pad, some squeal is to be expected. I would think that the squeal should be minimal though. If it is excessive, I would make the dealer warranty them. If they refuse, I would put a new aftermarket set in.

I have EBC Greenstuff pads on my 2000 STS, and they do the same thing, a light squeal at low speeds, low pedal pressure. It's just how performance pads are!

If you read your owners manual, it states some brake squeel is normal and does not mean something is wrong with your brakes. That is almost word for word.

You might try "bedding" your brakes. Basically, brake hard from 60 down to 10 mph. Drive for 2 minutes, repeat. Drive for 10 minutes, repeat, Drive for 2 minutes, repeat. Drive for 10 minutes with no brakes. Done. Check out baer or powerslot or some other aftermarket brake companies for the proper procedure. Brakes "glaze" over under normal driving conditions. Basically, the brake pad material wears off as dust and forms a thin sheet of glass on your rotor. That's what squeals. Bed them and you'll get rid of the squeal. It doesn't last forever, but it helps temporarily. Mine do the same thing... CTS with Sport Lux package with the high performance brakes. PITA
