Which end's brake pads wear faster?

    I have 01 STS. I just received a DIC-message "Change brake pads".
Do they usually wear the same amount on both ends or does the front pads wear faster? I just want to know which end I should check first!
I have 57000 miles in ODO.

The fronts do more than 60% of a cars braking. My guess is your front pads are worn! Rears can last at least 20k miles more.

    Probably closer to 80%
    Check the fronts first.

As noted below, however, be sure to check the rears also... you never know.

    Fronts, absolutely.

HOWEVER.... I would at least inspect the rears, make sure everything is okay....

Years ago on my 92 Eldorado, I did the fronts, everything was fine... until a rear claiper stuck on me, and covered my wheel with nasty scorching hot brake dust, that I couldn't remove... ended up finding another wheel at a junkyard.... so at least make sure the rears look good, maybe take them off, grease everything up with that silicone grease stuff, and make sure they are moving properly, pads are good, etc.

As the other's correctly said, the fronts do the majority of the stopping...thus, a rear brake problem is often overlooked, because it feels like it's stopping okay.

How about this: Check your codes, they should tell you which ones are bad.

    ..

The fronts definitely wear faster than the rear if everything is working properly, but not knowing when the last time the fronts or rears were changed, you would be best to check them both.

I have a 2000 STS replaced Front Brakes @ 60 k, rear looked as though they could go 30 k+ more
