    Magnasteer problems

My Speed Sensitive steering is acting funny....seem like it is pulsing on and off causing a pulsing in the steering wheel...this is especially noticable when in a turn....
I looked under the car and found a sensor on the steering rack and unplugged it....now the pulsing is gone...but the steering in no longer variable...it is harder to turn when sitting stilll...
What I am trying to determine here is what to look at to fix the problem....the steering rack? steering pump? contol module? and so on...

Any suggestioins will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

any codes ? it could be the steering position sensor ...unplgging stuff down there might just disable the system .....

    Re: Magnasteer problems

Well, After driving a few miles...I have determined that unplugging the sensor did not change it.....just made it more difficult to feel...cause the steering was firmer....

It almost feel like the wheels are not directly connected to the steering wheel....like they move around a little before they are stopped by my hands on the steering wheel? Does this make sense? I have checked for slack...and there is none to speak of....

I guess I am going to have to chase this problem with expensive parts.....should I replace the pump or the rack 1st? Are there any places online to get these part any cheaper than the local auto parts store?

Also I read somewhere on this board about someone already replacing thier rack....if you read this would you contact me and give me some pointers....it looks awful tight in there to get to the rack...it almost looks like I my have to drop the subframe to get it out....
    Thanks

First, check your codes like Stoneage Caddy said. That way your not shooting in the dark.

Lift up the front end and check the bearings and steering for play. To check the bearings, you place your hands on the top and bottom of the wheel and see if you can wiggle it back and forth. To check the steering, the car has to be in neutral, you place your hands on both sides of the wheel (towards the front and back of the car) and you turn it side to side. You have to do this to both wheels, and make sure you put a block behind the rear wheels so the car doesn't roll backwards.

Thanks, I have been avoiding that one, knowing I need new rear shocks first..
