    steering wheel telescoping not holding

Hi, hope I'm in the correct place. VEHICLE IS (1980 CADILLAC COUPE)I recently replaced my steering wheel with a much better looking one that I found on eBay. Mine was all cracked up and some on the wood inlay was gone, the one purchased WOW, almost brand new, NOS would of been correct had it not been for a small crack. Anyhow, b4 replacing the telescoping feature worked fine slide the lever, with little effprt, and push in or pull out and slide lever back and will hold, now with the new one it does not hold and it is very hard to manuever the lever either way; b4 was smooth now it's just hard and will not hold. Other day had to apply brakes hard and steering wheel simply pushed in, what went wrong?
It has the tilt/telescope feature. Any help would be aprreciated.
    Thanks

You removed the telescope lever when you replaced the wheel. The 3 screws that hold the lever to the threaded shaft are misadjusted. Pull the horn pad off, look at the 3 screws, you should see the old shinney marks and the elongated slots where the screws were before on the lever plate. To adjust from scratch, remover the lever plate and with a pair of pliers tighten the threaded shaft, then reinstall the lever plate close to the tight side of the slot in the new wheel and gently tighten. Very easy to strip the small threads in this locking plate which will allow the shaft to slip in relation to the locking lever plate.

I did make sure to place the threaded shaft correctly as I took pictures b4 removing and when replacing I knew where the 3 little screws went because of the markings it had, but I do know that when I removed them it was very easy and I reinstalled them they were really hard to turn by hand and even with a rachet. I just simply did not make a mental note which bolts went in the elongated slots, (I do this when removing bolts off tires) maybe this is where I messed up and I think I might of have already stripped the threads, but can I still do what you said and start from scratch?
    Thanks

It's important to have the threaded telescopic shaft tight in the steering column as well as the right position. If the 3 screws are stripped try a hardware store for some just a little fatter but close to the same length. The new screws should cut their own threads.
