I just purchased a 2000 STS with 65k. I believe I need new struts in front and was told they are 400+ dollars each. I heard the pump (in the back of the car) come on for about 5 seconds after I started the car a couple of days ago, but have not heard it come on ever since, and when I hit the slightest bump in the road it feels like the front of the car is bottoming out. Can someone lead me in the right direction to find out what I need to repair this problem, I do not know if the struts are bad or a sensor is bad or the pump is going bad etc... any help will be greatly appreciated. Rich.

Re: Front struts for 2000 sts
The ELC pump in the rear has nothing to do with the front struts. It proves out and preloads the rear shocks just after "key on, engine on", KOEO, in order to level the rear suspension. To test it, listen for the proveout, then open the trunk and 2 persons sit on the trunk lip. The pump should run and level the rear. When the people stand up, removing the load, the system exhaust valve (RR fenderwell) should open and vent off to return the rear to level.....actually just a tad higher than the front.
Front springs and struts are a different critter.......
