Replacing front bearing/speed sensor: which manufacturer?
1996 Concours, 150K miles
It looks as if I have bad speed sensors on the two front wheels (TC0023/TC0027), so I am getting ready to replace the speed sensor/hub assemblies. Rock Auto has parts from four manufacturers: Raybestos, Timken, BCA/National, and ACDelco. Does anyone have relative quality recommendations regarding these different makers?
I also wonder about the speed sensor wiring harnesses, which have been flexed for 12 years. It's sure easier to swap one out than to take the hub off, but retail price is over a hundred bucks. I might try doing that first.
Re: Replacing front bearing/speed sensor: which manufacturer?
Take the easy road first: Pull the sensor pigtail connectors, shoot 'em out with electronic cleaner or brakleen and see if that helps. While you're in there, check out the wiring, and try to rock the wheel in and out, holding it at 12:00 and 6:00. Any play points to new capsules.
Buy American........at least we can still properly harden bearing assemblies.
Re: Replacing front bearing/speed sensor: which manufacturer?
Thanks for the suggestion: I cleaned the contacts on both ends of the speed sensor harnesses (one end in the engine compartment, the other end at the wheel). No improvement.
The shop manual indicates a normal resistance range of 900-1300 ohms for the speed sensor. Mine measured 1150 from the top end of the harness, so it's a bit of a puzzler. I decided to try various resistances across the connector that goes back to the EBTCM to see if I could characterize the range it considered acceptable. Anything over 1100 caused the code to be set. I went down as low as 800 without setting the code, and then went back up to 1500 and still couldn't get the code to set. Plugged the sensor back in and all OK (for now).
It's acting like a bad ground somewhere. Guess I need to spend some more "quality time" with a voltmeter inside the engine compartment.

if its bad, buy Timken. though most are made in USA some are made in India. there is not diffrence in quality between the two other than what you might perceive. cant comment on the other brands when it comes to bearings. Timnken is all ive ever used when it came to aftermarket replacements.
