Hi guys, My 2001 eldorado, Bose rear speakers have a buzz at low volume but seems ok at higher levels.. is it the speaker or the amp that will do this?? thanks for any help!
On the older (late 80s 80s-early 90s) bose amps, the power supply caps would go bad, and when they started to go, the amps would buzz....maybe the newer amps do that too?
Thanks Kevin, now about the power supply caps.... how to locate or is it a complete replacement of amp's.... not sure how the speakers come out yet but laying in the trunk is a bitch. Thanks for the info.
I just replaced both the amps in the trunk. Once you find yourself crawling into the trunk of a nasty salvaged cadillac that's been sitting exposed to mother nature for years you'll be missing the cozy trunk of your car...trust me.
Yes BOSE equipped Eldorado has the mono amplifier for each speaker.
Very easy to diagnose if is the speaker of the amplifier:
Volume to minimum (mute), do you hear a buzz, then is the amplifier.
Generally a bad speaker will only make distorting sounds at medium to high volume and mainly on the medium to low frequencies.
A bad speaker will make a mechanical sound (something is touching something else) or it rattles, very different than the buzz of an amplifier.
You can replace the amplifier alone (very difficult) from the trunk without removing the speaker (you will be laying on your back with the hands in all kinds of highly uncomfortable positions). Probably in the process you will pop the speaker out of its mounting tabs (minimum amount of vertical force will do so). You can't put it back unless you remove the rear seat (backrest and all) to be able to remove the rear deck cover to access the top of the speakers.
Or you can just remove the speakers (like described above) and work on a bench in a comfortable position.
Thanks for the info guys!.. think I will be doing the speaker removal and then the amp replacement. Comfort is important. it keeps frustration down. I have been doing some repairs to my Eldo thanks to this forum and the great info you can get from the guys that know what they are talking about. Thanks again!
