I am a newbie to Cadillacs and looking to get my first Fleetwood. I am looking at either a 94-96 Fleetwood, or an early 80's fleetwood with the 500 CID engine.

Any suggestions on which is a better overall car. I like the look of the 94-96 Fleetwoods, but am intrigued by the simplicity and brute force of the earlier cars.

I am looking to spend $6000-8000 for the car overall.

Simplicity and brute force? HMM JMO but I think that applies to the later 94-96 model. heck of allot more force, and simplicity than an old barge withan 80s emission choked carb.

1976 was the last year for the 500 in fleetwoods. You can go a long way with an LT1.

I'm partial to the '93-'96 Fleetwood design. Since it basically shares the chassis and LT1 (small block Chevy) drive train with the Impala SS, there are many, many parts available to make it go faster and handle better.

I have a '96, but I think the consensus is that the '95 is better for modifications because of OBD I vs the OBD II of the '96.

Personally, I would only look at the earlier models if I desired a Coupe Deville. Actuall, if I desired a Coupe Deville it would be much earlier, like the '60's!

Whatever you choose, welcome to the Cadillac Forums.

'93 D-body had the LO5 motor, not the LT1. The LT1 was only '94-'96. And as was already mentioned, the '96 is LESS desireable for mods due to the OBDII electronics. It is a great car otherwise as long as you don't get a late production one when quality control was in the toilet (as they were nearing end of production).

So what engine did the 1982 model have? I am not familar enough to know all the model year breaks and engine configurations. I know they changed in 1983 and all that was available was the enemic 5.7L of the era. I know the 94-96 had the LT1, but the 93 didn't. Maybe somebody can bring me up to speed from say 1974 through 1982? Or maybe there is a history web page someone knows about?

The last year for the big motors ie. 500/472/425 was in 1979-80 I beleive. may be wrong though

As I recall, the '79 was the last year for the 425. Then '80 started the 368. That stayed until '81 then '82 I think started the HT4100. The 4100 and it's 4.5 and 4.9 iterations lasted until '90 which is when the LO5 5.7 started. The LT1 finished the RWD run from '94-'96.
I may be off a year or so here and there since this is totally from memory.

Thats what the excellent history site sent by Mad'Lac said as well, '79 last year for the 425. Looks like I might want to stop my search at that year unless I want to swap.
