Check engine light came on today while driving on the interstate. this has happened before during acceleration the engine would sputter and then the engine light would flash for about 3-5 seconds and then go out. i have the car for a year now and it's only done that 3 times including this episode this time the light flashed and then stayed on. i have about 103k miles on the car and this is the only serious issue i've had. oh yeah and for some reason the car rides best with premium fuel. If I try the regular unleaded the valves rattle during acceleration and it just runs kind of rough. Any ideas or has anyone had any similar issues? Does this model have an OBD like the earlier models and if so how do I pull the codes
you can't get codes without obd tool or gm scanner.
without codes we only can guess.
I guess it spark plugs or ignition coils. If you not replace them yet maybe it's time.
If you have the 3.6, keep the engine oil always full.
I would guess you will have miss codes show up. I hope the rattle you hear sometimes is not timing chain rattle.
If the oil is low you can get a miss and you could get a rattle and adding oil could cure everything. I'm hoping for you it is just oil or a bad coil.
Which engine do you have?
Flashing CEL indicates severe misfire detected... you may have plugged cats, be low on oil, need new plugs or coils ... maybe new timing chains ... could be a long list.
finally got around to posting. i have a bad #4 coil. it appears that it goes in and out but the check engine light is on and i haven't had any issues like i did in the original post. Since then i only drive back and forth to work which is a total of 4 miles a day. Question I'm about to change all of the coils and plugs. might as well do it since it doesn't seem to be a really easy job. i noticed that the intake manifold sits over the top of at least four of the coils. are there any gaskets that need to be replaced once i take it loose and on a scale of 1-10 how difficult is the job
EJ: I do not see where you have told us which engine you have the 3.6l V6 or the 4.7L V8?
I know from reading here that misfire, specially severe misfire in the 3.6L can be because of timing chains. If you have the 3.6 I would recommend you get that checked ASAP before it goes BANG.
I have the 3.6l V6. I had my mechanic check the codes and it showed the misfire for cylinder #4. now if it was the timing chains would it still register a cylinder? i figured it was time to just change all of them along with the plugs, because the car runs bad with regular unleaded fuel. i never really dog the car when i drive it but if i'm using an on ramp or passing i can tell the difference with the different octanes. 105k in miles so i'm guessing it's been a while since the car had a tune up. i bought it with 82k on the clock

Yeah it could be chains still ... as the timing gets off (due to chain slack / slipping) you won't be able to have proper combustion causing misfire.
basically from the animation below the valves aren't going to be fully closed when the spark is ignited causing power loss and a misfire.
I had a misfire recently but it turned out my oil level was low! Have to be aware of that. Cleared the code after topping off and everything went back to normal
Yes under the intake is a steel gasket it can probably be reused. On a scale rating I would say 4-5 only because the intake bolt close to the fire wall is hard to get to and the one electric connection at the back fire wall is hard to undo without breaking it. All other connections are all just time consuming. It should take you about 2-3 hours going slow you're first time. Make sure you put strong paper towels in the port holes so nothing falls down into them when you pull the intake.
I am pretty sure Bosch make most of the parts on the car for the ignition, and if I am not mistaken the trans is German as well.
