    I had a 91 long ago that did something similar and initially thought it was a dragging brake, too. Closer inspection also led me to the blown fuse. Realized it was starting off in third, no matter what position the shifter was in. Turned out to be a bad shift solenoid and replacing it fixed the problem with the fuse blowing and starting in the wrong gear.

    This is where a service manual comes in handy. if you still haven't found your short there's only a handful of items related to the fuse. and you can test them with ohm meter.

    I unplugged the a/c compressor and its been running without any problem thus far. only time will tell what happens next.

    Time will tell you that summer is coming and if you want A/C, repair cluch or short in A/C wiring. , in the meantime bear grin it.
