95 Fleetwood Questions

Remove this ad
Just had my 95 for 1 day, but have a few questions, unlike any other Caddies or any other car I ever had....

Over about 70 mph, we hear a wind sound coming from the trunk area (under the 3rd brake light housing) which is just like wind chimes! You know, the kind you hang on the back porch. That's a new wind sound on me! All hearing wife in back seat tracked down the source area.

My windshield was, I thought, coated with wax or something; cleaned and cleaned, in and out. Appears that the slight distortion, over about 75%, is due to something happening in the glass sandwich. New one #2.

Hate the fact that, unlike my 93 DeVille or 96 Seville, you can't seem to make your vent air blow out wherever you want.

Also, the temp setting, being in the other 2 cars at 72, has to be in the Fleetwood at 69 to feel the same. I am going to clean any/all sensors I can find in the dash area tomorrow in order to see if this helps. They probably have never been touched on purpose. I know of the 2 sensors on top of the dash, by defrost vent, and the 2 on the inside mirror, but are there any temp. sensors in the front area of dash?

Thanks, Paul

Re: 95 Fleetwood Questions

I am not sure what is meant by air not blowing out where you want it from the A/C system. This could be related to why you are not getting adequate cooling. Also remember that this is still cooler weather and you won't get a really good cooling test from your A/C unless the outside temperature gets above 75 or so.

You might have some ducts in the A/C that are not connected for some reason. Or possibly a slow freon leak. You should have a temp. sensor on top of the dashboard.

When the weather gets about 80, set the A/C as cold as it will go and let it crank for a while until you could about freeze meat inside the car. Then shut off the engine and open the hood. Touch the condenser and evaporator pipe. If they are both cold to the touch (likely with condensation forming), then you are in good shape as far as cooling. Try the blower motor on high and see if you are getting even air flow from your dash vents. If you are not, it might be a duct problem.

I am not sure about the windshield. You say there is something cloudy in the "glass sandwich". Windshield glass is one plate with some laminate applied. I have never seen a problem with this, even on a very old car. I don't know unless the windshield is heavily scratched or pitted, or has very bad checking from being left out in the sun, or possibly has been contacted with some strong chemical that somehow ruined the finish.

Wind noise sounding like chimes coming from the back window area? It sounds like something metal is rattling in the trunk area. Wind will usually be either an air leak sound (like that of a window being rolled down slightly) or a high-pitched squeel. Check your trunk seals and everything metallic around the inside of the trunk and under the back ledge. Also look inside that stoplamp housing for anything loose.

Cadillac had an option on the front windsheild called Sungate Automotive. It's option code A23. Check the sticker on the trunk lid for A23. I don't have it on my windshield and my vision is perfect. If something is distorting your window, this could be the cause.

Re: 95 Fleetwood Questions

Well, one bad thing on such a big luxo car is that you can't adjust where you want the HVAC system to blow. There also is no Recirc option. I drive the big white boat everyday and have gotten used to this, I guess.

About the noise, I'm not sure. There's a noticable air noise when the rear air levelers are pumping up, but other than that, no other noise. And I drive at 70-80 everyday.

This is an amazing car at any speed above 70mph....believe me!

Re: 95 Fleetwood Questions

Thanks, Saint; I have the A23. What is it supposed to accomplish?

Thanks, Jack; I must have not explained things very well; I was just noting that, compared to my other 2 mid-90s Cads, one can't manually override the system to make the air come out of one place, such as dash vents.

They all work, as does the fan. I'll check my empty trunk for "air chime residue" to get rid of my trunk chimes.

I love the big white lady; now, for a name....Moby? White Hope? Great White? Soap on Wheels? Super Molar? : )

I think it is some sort of tint for the front window. I don't have it and the information I've read is pretty vague.

Re: 95 Fleetwood Questions

I did a search and found that it has metallic particles which are supposed to retard sun damage on interior. This was originally a Fla. car, so that is beginning to make sense to me. Unfortunately, I have a radar detector and I think it won't work much on that glass. It's been so darn consistently below average weather here in the east! There should be a law that, when you get a new car, you should get at least 3 good (good here is just getting to average temp) days to fiddle with it.

Re: 95 Fleetwood Questions

Make sure all the parts of your jack and spare are correctly fastened down, they could be making the noise in the trunk.

HMMMM..... maybe that's why my EZ-Pass won't work through the glass.

Re: 95 Fleetwood Questions

There's a procedure in the Factory Service Manual to adjust the HVAC controls, so that your "set" temp matches what the real temp is, in case there is some variation. And, if you have a Sungate windshield, neither your radar detector or toll-road EZ Pass tag will work reliably. In Houston, if you have a car with a Sungate, they will provide you with a pass that bolts to your license plate frame in front at no extra charge.
