ok, last night i was stuck in some traffic and out of nowhere my A/C was no longer cold...at first I assumed compressor took a dump or possible belt popped for whatever reason...still had steering
I turned the a/c off and still in traffic i look down and see the "high coolant temp" light flashing...i managed to get over with a lil steam coming up from the hood and made it to a side street. parked and let it cool
the overflow bottle was boiling and bubbling...after it cooled down it lost some coolant and had the low coolant light on.
i started it up and checked everything. with the exception of the low coolant, with the A/C off I managed to blow a few redlights and get home, as long as i was moving and no A/C it seemed OK
this morning I filled the system, went to work ect and everything seems fine.
my only guess is that maybe I have a cooling fan relay crapping out...my question is, I assume the fan relays are the 2 green ones under the hood near the fuse box.
am i correct on that location and which one is the cooling fan one
and if anyone thinks something different, lets hear it
The first thing I would do, with engine off, was pull the plug on the sensor on the water pump. Start the car. Both fans should be on. If they are both on, the problem is something else besides the fans. If one or both is not working, you need to find out why (relay, bad fan etc.). I am assuming you have two electric fans, but do you have one mechanical and one electrical?
both fans are electric...i ran the car all day yesterday and not a single issue, cold A/C and both fans working fine.....thinking maybe the computer had a brainfart or something
You can also put your climate control into diag mode and scroll to pointer 24 (or 25). That displays the coolant temp in Celsius. it should go to 98 - 100 and stay there. (208-212F). It should Not go over 103 - 104.
Up temp and Off at the same time to get it into Diag mode.
Did you feel your upper radiator hose to make sure that coolant was flowing? (Hot). I say Thermostat, it's very easy to replace on these cars. I just replaced mine on my 94 for precautionary reasons, including the corroded water outlet housing and both upper and lower radiator hoses. I put a SuperStat Stant thermostat in my Fleetwood. They're high quality thermostats and feel more heavy duty compared to Motorad stats and will last much longer in the long run.
It's a lot of work, it's messy, but really it's general maintenance and will help extend the life of the head gasket because too many overheat conditions can permanently damage it. And that's no fun. So be careful.
Also you can scan to number 8 on the diagnostic screen, and click on that with the Out Temp button, this will give you readings in Fahrenheit.
My Caddy surprising is always on the cool side, barely ever going over 180 degrees. One time I was in Vegas during summer, and I was idling at a drive thru fast food joint, and the fans kicked on! That was the very first time I noticed the fans ever turned on like that, because in normal to mild heat conditions, my Fleetwoods fans never turn on. I guess that's a good thing.
im very mechanically inclined so a thermostat is nothing to change...both hoses where hot but i could feel the water circulating, just no fans to pull air through in the bumper to bumper traffic...as for whatever caused it, i dont know, it hasnt done it again since...
decided to finally get out and mess with the car when I had some free time as lately if im in a drive thru the A/C has stopping working a few times...turn it off and back on and it seemed to be fine but not as cold as it should. once driving and air flowing across the condensor it was a lil cooler
checked both fan relays as the fans work fine when jumping them out to test
heres what i found for the A/C fan relay
changed the relay out and so far so good, nice cold air
Even if the fans seems to work good there is a chance that it has something wrong that makes them draw too much current. This could cause this type of problem.. Check how many amps its drawing...
