While my 79 Phaeton is still in the body shop waiting for paint I was thinking about replacing the carpet.
It is the Arizona firemist color, does anyone know the correct color for the carpet?
Cheers
Look on the data plate on the driver's side below the windshield under the hood to see the interior color code - your interior color should be antique saddle, then, as Craig (77CDV) always excellently advises: call SMS and they will have the original materials for whatever you need. By the way, the exterior color of your car is called Western Saddle Firemist. Good luck!
Just like Bro-Ham said. Tell SMS you want a sample of carpet for your car. Interior color is Antique Saddle. They should send a little square that looks just like original. Your exterior color is code 96, Western Saddle Firemist, btw.
Guyrobert, this is a little off topic, but do you have a main thread for your car anywhere with pics & such? I can't remember seeing it. Are you just getting it repainted or does it also need bodywork? We love a good car story around here.
EDIT I remember your car now, it's the one without opera lights! Thought you were just getting the bottom of the doors done?
Yes Ben I was, but I got some sap on the hood a while back...(a long while ) and it ate though the paint so I talked to the body shop on the corner (literally) it will be 2 years ago this March! and he said it would be best to paint the whole car so all the panels will match.
I got on with the restoration of my Brown 75 LeSabre convertible and wasn't in a hurry. However it is now time to get it done,
I bought up a used hood from Pick Apart today for $94.77 Canadian (that's about $75.00 US) great prices there.
However it is 66" wide and won't fit in my DD Jeep so I will have to find another bigger ride.
I am also looking for a posi unit for the rear but I should probably start a new thread for that.
Back to the carpet... A place on Ebay said it was either their 871 sandalwood or our 9205 cognac so I asked them for samples
I also need to paint the steering column and a few inside bits so if any one has the paint code for antique saddle it would be appreciated.
Here are some pics for a reminder
I can say this with confidence, SMS will have a better color match to original than any other company out there. Because they reproduce materials to the original color codes rather than trying to match your carpet to one of their preselected colors.
Also, from personal experience, I'd avoid replacing the carpet all together unless it's trashed. My first Phaeton had aftermarket carpet installed before I bought the car. I don't know who made it, but the pile didn't compare to original, the color was off, and it faded out much faster than original carpet does. I don't have any experience with SMS other than the samples they sent me, so all I can vouch for is the color match. Just my 2 cents.
It's not that the carpet is trashed, it just that it has some nasty cigarette burns/holes.
I dropped the hood off at the body shop today, hopefully that will motivate him!
There is no aftermarket carpet that will meet the quality of the OEM Cadillac carpet. SMS (and others) will fit well, but the pile will not be the same. For holes and cig burns, take small patches from under a seat near a bolt hole, and glue them in place with hot glue. Trim the pile with scissors, brush, and the patch will be indistinguishable from stock.
Check your homework - I think SMS has the actual original old stock genuine carpet and upholstery plus headliners, vinyl tops and much more from the oem car manufacturers.
The samples I received from SMS of the unusual Burnished Gold interior color for my 79 deVille d'Elegance were the exact one year only fur-like Tangier carpeting and also the same Venetian velour as in my car. Headliner in that color was exact as well. Plus they sent me an exact swatch of my Colonial Yellow elk grain vinyl top! I doubt they would have reproduced these oddball items to have sitting on the shelf waiting for me to call and order.
I think SMS is the only way to go to make it authentic and of original 1970's fine Cadillac polyester quality.
Good info! I had no idea that SMS has the exact carpet, that's great news. Not surprised, though. I got seat material samples from them for my Custom optioned 65 C10 seat, and it was spot on.
That also means that we could get carpet from SMS to redo stock floor mats!
