What happens if the belt on the AIR pump were to snap and it wasn't spinning anymore? I don't know too much about how this thing works and what it actually does......
Imagine the air pump being a bellows like a fireplace bellows. It pumps air for a designated amount of time to super heat the converter. A hot converter works better. No air pumped means the converter delays warming up and overall fuel mileage suffers.
I have a Flowmaster cat on there now that has the inlet for the AIR pump and it's connected. My car is now registered as Historic so I don't have to worry about emissions anymore. I'd like to rid the car of anything that might be bogging the engine down, at this point all the original emissions equipment is still connected and active.

I've also been messing around with custom TV cable adjustments to find a good middle ground between efficient shifts and better uphill performance......
The A.I.R. pump uses very little power plus it's probably part of an alternator RPM stepup.
