Auto Level failure, 94 Fleetwood Brougham

My auto level stopped working. I was driving and suddenly the ride got rough and I noticed the car was low in the rear. When I sit on the bumper, the auto level does not come on to raise it up, as it used too. I had an
older DeVille that the bladder in one of the shocks failed, but the compressor would keep running. This time, the compressor is not running. Any thoughts?

The compressor probably died. Happened to me. It's a COSTLY item.

Is there any way to test it?

checks the blown 30A underhood fuse.
Do you see LEVEL RIDE lamp on the panel?
Checks air lines between compressor and shocks.
btw, original 94 compressor is discontinued, but you can use compressor from 95-96 models, but LevelRide lamp will be absent.

Re: Auto Level failure, 94 Fleetwood Brougham

    The fuse is fine.
The "Level Ride" on the panel does not light up.
Since the "Level Ride" does not light up, I assume there are no leaks since it would run all the time then.

I had about 150 LBs of tools in my trunk and two large teenagers in the back seat when it stopped. I noticed it because my ride got real rough and bouncy. That is where I am at right now. If I get 3 other adults in the car, it bounces all over.
Is it possible that I overloaded a sensor or something? Or bent something under the car? If so, what am I looking for?

It could be that the sensor is broken and doesn't know there's a load to deal with.
without the people and tools in the car it should sit at a pretty normal height. If it doesn't your springs are bad too.

It sets fine without anyone in the car.
I will have the car up on racks this weekend. Where is the sensor?

The sensor is up above the Diff. It is mechanical / electrical - NOT electronic. The service manual has test procedures for the compressor. Leaks will not necessarily be indicated with the system light.

I found the switch, disconnected the linkage and cycled it a few times over about 10 minutes with no effect. I noticed one shock has oil on it, while the other one seems fine.

It is working! I had to disconnect the battery today, and when I hooked it back up and turned on the ignition, the compressor fired up and the dash panel "auto level" light came on.
    Any thoughts from you gurus?

It almost sounds like either the computer is stopping it from working for some reason, if it even has that much control over it, or maybe a relay that is sticking that's stopping it from working. Did you try checking codes?

Turns out I have broken wires. Compressor works, but only by bypassing it. Replaced the wires and it is working now, but the car will not raise up, so I now have to determine if the pump is putting out enough pressure or if I have a leak.

Something is wrong. The dash light stays lit now and goes off when the auto level is working. The light stays on even when the the car is off now. It will only go of when leveling. Any thoughts?
