Back with another Brougham d'Elegance (and maybe a motor swap).

    Hi Cadillac family,

It's been a while since I made a post, but I've been rather busy these last couple months. In the mean time I sold my white '89 d'Elegance and picked up a very nice '91. I bought it was just over 98k miles last August, and now it has just over 108k -- I love to drive these boats!

Anyway, I'm the 3rd owner, and the 2nd owner bought it from the original "little old lady" owner in 2006 with only 50k miles on it. I put wire wheels on it, but I recently swapped in a set of 93-96 Fleetwood wheels, since the wires need new caps and a good polishing.

The previous owner put dual exhaust on it, which is a bit loud but not too annoying. It seems to have really opened up the 305, and it moves around nicely. I was doing a tune up recently and I had never seen a dirtier motor, not to mention routine maintenance looked to be 30k miles overdue. Anyway, I think I was too late, because after fixing the leak (intake manifold gasket) and replacing plugs, wires, rotor, cap, air cleaner, and various other things, the motor has developed an awful knock. And there's metal filings in the (new) oil. I think the motor is done.

The good news is I'm handy with a wrench and I have a lead in on a few 305 and 350 motors. There's a '91 Caprice motor that I can pick up for $250 and bolt right in, and also a '93 Fleetwood with the 350.

Has anyone swapped a TBI 305 for a TBI 350 motor? I'd like to do it, but I'm not sure what else I'd need besides the motor. This car is just too nice to part with, and summer is here!

    Best,
    Greg

    Hello!
That sure is a nice Brougham, shame about the engine.
    Good luck on the swap.

I'd do the 350 because there's not much difference in gas mileage. The 93 Fleetwood has a TBI 350 so it would be a direct swap. I'm not sure if the computer is different so maybe grab it just in case. Love both of those rims on the car but the Fleetwood rims are a beautiful add on.

I second this. Grab a 7747 computer though...truck computers were optimized for more performance compared to passenger cars and even the f bodies

Should be a fun swap. Make sure to document it for us.

That car is very nice. I'm not usually a fan of the 90-92 trim but it looks great.

What a great way to come back after a while , not to mention the car is gorgeous and looks like new
However, you may disapprove my post or not ,I never like these composite headlamps design ,like 80-89's style

Thanks for the welcome back! Each style has its merits, so I can appreciate both. I like the little things on the newer Broughams like chrome trim on the window frames and vertical a/c vents, with chrome lever tabs. I also really like the rubber-topped door locks.

But the early 80s Fleetwoods with crushed velour seats have little accents that set them off too.

    Good looking car!

I don't think theres much difference in a 305 to 350, both run strong. I don't think the 305 exhaust is a direct bolt up and may require a trip to the muffler shop.

That is a beauty! The time invested in a motor swap will be well spent.

I could get used to 4 doors again if i had a nice copy like that one!

Find a wrecked 1996 and use the entire drivetrain. It will wake up your car and get better mileage too.

Easy to say from my computer terminal : )
