    Lower Ball Joints

Can I replace the Lower Ball Joints only or do I need to replace the entire control arm? I have seen on-line where it appears that I can do either? Some say that the ball joint in integral to the control arm & must be replaced as a unit? Mine are still on the car but plan on replacing this week. Any pointers? (1994 Fleetwood)

    Thanks,

    Keith

Keith, lowers press in and press out. Easily. No need to do the complete arm.

This is a truck, but it's the exact same (good 'ol GM):

I have the same ball joint/U joint press from Harbor Freight/Princess Auto/Every parts store, but you can get by with a big C clamp and a couple big sockets and spacers.

I'd consider renting the proper press.

I'd also consider changing the uppers at the same time. Those wear out much faster.

When I did mine two years ago I got them from O'reillys and they let you rent the press for free. Just have to put a credit card down.

    Cool Re: Lower Ball Joints

You certainly can replace the lower ball joints as a component, but go to a local parts outlet that rents specialty tools and get the tool for that purpose. Rentals are usually free, although technically you have to BUY the tool , then return it for a full refund. The same tool you have to use is for removal and installation. Be careful that you do NOT cant the joints out of alignment when installing, or you will have to take them out and do it over to get them in straight. I have rebuilt the entire front suspension and steering system on my 1992 Brougham and it runs like a charm. If you don't mind
putting forth a little effort, you can do this yourself and save a bundle over the shop's fees. Lots of luck!
