    safe to paint my alternator?

I know that may seem like an odd question, but my junkyard CS144 was previously painted black (works fine btw) but half the paint has fallen off and its got a purple spraypaint spot on it from the junkyard for warranty. I'm wondering if I can repaint it again so it doesnt look like I have a ratty junkyard alt in my car.

I have painted them before with no problems, try getting the paint off with some brake cleaner first tho

    Acetone works better.

Quite. In fact, basically all of my cars' alternators look different. The trucks have a spotless and a grungy aluminium housing respectively, the Cadillac has a polished one, the Pontiac has a shiny black one.

Definitely scrape off, sandoff, blast off, or use acetone to get all of the old paint off. That way it will spray on clean and maintain a nice finish.

If I was going to paint one, I would completely disassemble it first and just paint the housings. Not sure I would want to just hose it down with paint with all the innards still in it.

Or stuff rag scraps in openings and mask the pulley surface and you would probably be OK.

Just make sure to get them all out again!

Re: safe to paint my alternator?

if you decide to pull it completly apart id recommend an alternator shop disassemble and reassemble it for you...i watched my guy do mine when rebuilding mine and for the most part its straight forward but he did have a wire inserted in the back of the case and once together he removed it so it holds something in place to work right.

That is for holding the brushes in.

The main problem I see people have with alternator is forgetting how they had the four bolts lined up.

That's why you should always mark the housing.

Another problem is tightening these bolts. They are very weak and only have to be snug enough to hold. Together.

It's usually more of a problem loosening the bolts, especially if it's been together for a while.
There'd be mo problem painting it but unless you plan on doing it by hand any overspray you see inside it or on parts that aren't supposed to be painted will probably look just as bad as what's there now.

A cheap foam brush and a 6 pac can make stuff look new again, I painted my brake master cyl that way, turned out real nice, but it took a little time and about 3 foam brushes.

Sanded and painted it spent a lot of time on the part you see (right side) and not so much time on the left side. At least the part you see looks nice. The rest looks about like it used to, except with more paint
