87 Brougham ECC gone black. after a couple weeks of intermittent working.

Well, as is always the case, just as I am getting ready for a drive to Chicago for the auto show, my ECC display has gone black after a few weeks of off and on working.

For the last few weeks it would work fine unless I took long rides. At some point it would go off. I would park it and the next time I would start it up, a few days later it would be fine again.
Being winter, I haven't driven it much, and hoped I could live with it until spring when diagnosing it is a bit easier.(Working outside.)

I read through a lot of archived threads and couldn't find any dealing with the intermittent part of my problem, before going permanently out.
I have the FSM and the diagnostic chart, but will be found dead in a snowdrift with it clutched in my hands before I get it figured out outside.

Anyone have an idea what would have caused the symptoms I described? Any thermal overload type part that finally would die?

I have a used untested ECC programmer that I pulled last year, and I put that in and was still black. I had installed it before in summer before replacing the power module with another one I pulled. When it worked, or seemed to, I pulled the programmer and replaced the original one and all was fine for a while.

Yes, thank you both, that is so much clearer than the FSM!
-4 degrees right now, if it warms up a bit I will try today, otherwise, I will be making my way to Chicago in a Honda van.
