    81cdv shut engine light comes on

    So my buddy picks up an 81 cdv project. I believe it has the 368 engine. He claims that when he starts it a temp light comea on. Then the shut engine light comea on and the whole car shuts off. My question is what causes this and how to repair it. Or even by pass it. Ive never come across this issuse since most vehicles have gauages.

    I'd guess the coolant temp sensor is bad.

    Even if it were the coolant sensor it wouldn't shut off the car..but then again this engine, though similar to mine in my 80 coupe, has more electrical stuff.

    Please get a verification as to what the lights exactly say.

    I do not believe there is a "shut engine light," but I know there are two lights that say "Stop Engine Temp" and "Stop Engine Oil Pressure."

    Neither of these lights have the capability of turning off the engine; the car's computer is not smart enough to kill the engine when there is no coolant or oil, and it will happily allow the engine to destroy itself before doing anything to intervene. However, if the engine doesn't have any oil pressure, there might be too much friction for the pistons to move, thus killing the engine instantly.

    The lights may in fact be inconsequential; both lights illuminate when the ignition is turned to RUN and if I recall correctly, both stay on for a second or two after the engine is running. The engine may be stalling because its not getting enough fuel, air, or spark, and the Stop Engine lights may simply be on because the ignition is in the run position.

    ^^My '81 368 CID engine does not have a "stop engine" light. It has a single "check engine" light that come on when the ignition switch is turned on. When the car starts, if there are no trouble codes set by the computer the light will go out. If there is one or more trouble codes set (this can be determined by entering diagnostic mode and checking it) then the "check engine" light will stay on until the trouble codes are addressed or repaired and the codes are cleared from the computer. A shop manual for the 81 car would be a very good idea.

    ^^ I feel as if I am wearing orthopedic shoes. I stand corrected. My "81 car does have a "stop engine/oil pressure" light which lights when the key is turned on prior to start up. It then goes out when the oil pressure is sufficient after start up. I had to physically check my own car to make sure. Sorry for the confusion on my part.

    The oil pressure switch will have a link with the fuel pump. After the start, if the sender does not report pressure, power to the fuel pump is cut. Solution, test/replace oil sender.

    That sounds way too advanced for '81... But than again, so does variable displacement and on-board diagnostics.
