I just had this problem with mine. It's the vehicle speed sensor that is on the transmission. kind of an expensive part. But it is really easy to change. Jack up the car and crawl under on the drivers side. You will see a wire harness to the back of the transmission, going to a round sensor about the size of a baseball. there is one 10mm bolt that holds it in there. once you remove the bolt, you kinda have to pry it out (there is a O-Ring to seal it on the sensor). Watch out for transmission fluid, as some will come out. also there will be a plastic gear that will probably fall out. Make sure you put the pointy end towards the transmission. Then it is reverse order to put the sensor back in. Also make sure you get the right one according to your axle gears.

When did they stop using the Speedometer Cable. My 85 is cable driven. Were the Olds 307 powered setups using the tranny mounted speed sensors?
