    Power door locks-89 Brougham

Hello - the power door locks on my 89 Brougham do not work. I was given 2 new locks but the mechanic said they were 3 prong switches and I need 5 prong switches. Is this correct? I can't seem to find any online> Any help would be appreciated. Did GM make a "standard" switch around that time in one of their other lines I might be able to use? Thanks

    Have you checked the fuse?
I know that some switches from later models are different and wouldn't work on mine. Have you tried eBay?

I never thought of that. Would one fuse cover both switches? thanks

The fuse you want to check is the Body Fuse; it's a 20 amp fuse located in the fuse panel behind the driver's side kick panel. If you want to check the fuse before pulling it, check to see if the cigar lighters or the interior courtesy lights (the square lights on each door) work. If the courtesy lights and cigar lighters work, the body fuse is working and does not need to be replaced.

If the body fuse does not need to be replaced, then the issue may be with the issue with the Door Lock Relay, which sends power to each of the lock motors. The Door Lock Relay is supplied power through the Horn Circuit Breaker (also located in the under dash fuse block). To check the Circuit Breaker, press the horn button on the steering wheel. If the horn does not go off, the Horn Circuit Breaker has failed and needs to be replaced.

The Lock Switches are three pronged, so the ones you have are probably correct. The Door Lock Relay is five pronged, so that may have been what your mechanic was thinking of. It is unlikely that both Lock Switches would fail at the same time, but if the Body fuse and Horn Circuit Breaker are both functioning, I would replace the lock switches. You should also have your mechanic verify that both Lock Switches are receiving power and the lock system is properly grounded.
