    1970 DeVille window motor replacement

    Hello all,

I attempted to replace the front passenger side window motor and ran into trouble. No problem removing the door panel and handle. First thing I noticed was no access to the 3 bolts on the motor which was behind the door panel. So I used a device to keep the glass from dropping and then removed the 4 bolts that hold the window assembly (I think that's what it is called). I was able to rotate the assembly around to an opening in the door to remove the 3 motor bolts. Then the major problem began, I can't get the 4 holes lined back up and also have the wheel in the track.
Hopefully this is all clear and someone is able to assist.

    Thanks in advance.
    Vernon

You might get more help in the Deville/Fleetwood RWD forum.
The oldest Caddy in this forum is 1985 (and our engines all face the wrong way)

You have to drill 3 3/4 inch holes through the door on the inside to access bolts.

There is a template in the body manual I had to measure and drill. Pretty easy actually then you have access to bolts.

Pm me I think I have pics.

Yah, had to do that with my 70 too. Have to drill holes in the inner door frame to get the bolts. Most stupid thing I have seen. The manual even tells you where to drill the holes. You'd think that when they designed it they would have put holes in the door when it was stamped at the factory. Guess they thought the motors would never have to be replaced. After all, they must have thought a car certainly wouldn't last 40 years, Would it??

Thanks Jeff & Smelvis for your comments.

I'll try drilling out the 3 holes on the other (driver side) door.
Now, I'm trying to get the 4 bolts of the regulator assembly back in (that I should have NOT removed) and still have the roller inside the window track, yet the coil spring seems to have too much tension to get the 4 holes aligned again.
Do you think the regulator assembly should be difficult to put back in? I'm not sure what to do next.

I never took my regulator out so I don't know. I'd look at the other side and see how it lines up.
Now let me give you a hint--- My car had been sitting for a while before I got it. Mud daubers were all over the place and even inside the doors. The rubber mouldings at the beltline are bad (they still are and I use duct tape on them when it is going to rain). Water got inside the doors and the drain holes got plugged up. Long story short, the doors were full of water and the motors were submerged. Ruined both of them. While you are inside the doors, make sure your drain holes are clear.

It was water that toasted mine!

I would remove the motor and see if you can get everything back in the door then drill the holes and install motor. It probably won't fit back in as one unit.
