    Ok, good to know! It's currently around 235,500 miles with no known major rebuild. It's amazing to think that this car has traveled roughly the distance to the moon! Or far enough to drive completely around the circumference of the earth 9.5 times. When I think about it in those terms, it makes all of the cars little idiosyncrasies seem all the more trivial. Even more amazing is how the power seats managed to start working again after I bought the car, which they still do to this day.

    With 235k on it that's outstanding... keep up the maintenance and it'll live for a long time.

    I worked at a Mazda dealer where we would take the valve covers and oil pan off and steam clean the sludge off the motors, only place on earth that did that.

    Whats in the pics isn't that bad.

    That top end isn't too bad. The 350 in my caddy, shockingly, was very clean on the top end, with only some discoloration on the rockers/ pushrods. I've seen some cars in the junkyard (including the van my valve covers came from) where you could remove the oil sludge with a trowl.

    Been away from the forum for a while, just checked in on this thread, I put a rear sway on mine shortly after I got it, makes a huge difference!
    It was new and I bought it off amazon a little over $100.00 it's a must do.
    I have been thinking about buying a set of Cadillac real wire wheels locally here, were they a correct option for a 79 Phaeton?

    Yes, authentic wire wheels were a factory option in 1979. Wire wheels were first available as an option for deVille and Fleetwood starting in 1978 model year.

    Great news! They come with a set of new WW tires hoping to buy them for under 1K,
    Anyone know what they option cost back then would have been?

    GuyRobert;

    As Bro-Ham said, wire wheels were optional on DeVilles & Fleetwoods in 1979. However, the Phaetons came standard with the optional locking wire wheel covers as part of the Phaeton package along with leather interior trim, power seats, and other options that were made standard. That being said, I'm not sure if one could substitute the wheel covers for a set of real wire wheels, or not. You may have had to get them put on at the dealer. not sure how "custom order" friendly GM was at that time. Be sure to post pictures when it's out of the paint shop!!

    I seriously doubt Cadillac was strict about Phaeton options, I can't remember anything in the price book prohibiting Phaeton from being equipped with wire wheels. Everything was custom ordered in 1979, especially by today's standards.
