>I'm about to replace my wiper switch, i tried today to open up the dash, but i came across a few problems...
First, the air control lever is in the way for the front plastic wood panel and the above cover, i simply could not get it off, there were to screws in between the windscreen de mist air outlets. Is there anyone who have done this before?
The air door lever knob is held on by a tiny Allen head set screw in the underside. Loosen the set screw and pull the knob towards you. Be careful removing the grille, it is very fragile. Unless you have a grille removal tool, you will need to carefully move the swivel pins towards the centre of the grille while gently pulling on the grille. Once they are free of their mounting holes, turn the grille as far as you can to one side or the other and slide it carefully out of the air duct hole in the dash. Now you can remove all the screws holding that panel in place giving you access to the three switch (wipers, lights & cruise) panels behind it.
^This. The tiny allen head screw threw me for a loop. I couldn't figure it out. It looked like just a little dimple on the switch then I finally tried the smallest allen head I had and it worked.
I used a jewlers screwdriver because I didn't have an allen key small enough (what size is it anyways?)
I've never found a screw behind the vent that held in that side of the dash bezel.....and I've taken apart many of them....maybe its just like the screws that hold down the dash top...alot of people don't feel like putting them back in.
^ Not in the dash top. As I recall the side screw goes through the matte black part of the panel to be removed. It's hard to see......it's about opposite the "mph" script on the speedo
@cadillac kevin- because there is another screw inside on top corner to the right..
This is the breakdown, the speedo bezel is held in place by 3 screws on bottom; 2 on bottom left and 1 bottom right. There's two screws on opposite sides of the "mph" top edges. The dash vent is removed by depressing tabs and pulls out but you need to remove the knob on the lever with a small allen tool. Once that is removed, then the dash vent will come out. There is another screw on the top right corner once the dash vent is removed. Then you have to open your key and shift the lever all the way down and your speedo dash comes out.
On mine, I do not need to remove the dash vent since I never bothered to put back the screw that is behind the dash vent. This is easier to remove and don't have to fuss with the dash vent to come out.
Last Junkyard trip I made, I saw a dash where the air control switch had been bent 90 degrees and the slot for it made wider with some sort of grinder.
Apparently very few people know about that Allen screw.
Thats alot of effort to get past a lever. I'm sure if you pulled on the bezel hard enough, it would bend enough to get out of your way or break (it is after all only plastic)
I remember on my old coupe, I didn't know how to remove it and I just simply twisted it off, ironically I did it again with my current coupe and then I realized how it came off and replaced the little lever with another one. It was a pain in the you know where to remove it and install.
