    Alignment Within Specs, Wear Continues

    Hello Again,

Been a while since I've been here. Let me pick your brains again:

'89 FWB has been chewing up the outside of front tires. I had it looked at. They told me to replace idler arm and steering damper. I also replaced front shocks. I took it and had it aligned. They said it was actually to spec, and printed out a sheet demonstrating such. However, six months later, I had to get two new tire for the front because they are wearing on the outside. I also notice before and after that taking a sharp right or left hand turn will cause a rattle in the front which sounds like a socket in a tube, going one way when you take the turn, then going back when you turn back. Please advise.

Thank in advance for your suggestions.

Center link? Inner/outer tie rods and sleeves? Upper/lower control arm bushings? Ball joints? Have any of those been replaced? Mileage? Steering damper has nothing to do with alignment, nor do shocks.

I'd get it inspected somewhere else, and get them to check the alignment.

Could be the spindle nut is loose or the dust cap that covers it is loose. I had that on mine and sounded like how you're describing it.
Maybe you'll need the add shims on the A arms to reduce the positive camber it has even though it's within specs as you mention

Something isn't right with the alignment. Might as well let somebody else take a crack at it.

Yeah thanks guys. Thinking I'll just take it somewhere else. Problem is, you finally get the money to bring it in and they don't do it right, so now I have to spend that money again. PITA.

Some alignment specs are too liberal. I like my Cadillacs with zero or very close to zero camber.

Crooked mechanics can fudge an alignment my leaning on the car or even print someone else's alignment to pass off as yours.

To rule out the possibility that your mechanic is lying to you, most Corporate owned shops (Goodyear, Firestone, Monro Muffler) offer free alignment checks. Even if you don't trust them to service your car, a shop like that will have up-to-date alignment equipment/software, and would provide you with accurate alignment measurements.

I wouldn't trust a company owned garage to do an good job inspecting the front end components. You should look in your area to see if there are any garages that only deal with chassis and suspensions; look for places that do front end repair for auto collision shops, or work on commercial vehicles. A shop like that would be able to do a better job at inspecting your front end, and finding the cause of your tire issues, but they would probably charge for an alignment check.
