    "Not Charging" light intermittant

I have a 1991 Broughm. The "Not Charging" light comes on intermittantly. If it were on steady, I could have the alternator tested.

But with intermittant, it is only on when I am not at the mechanic's shop. Any suggestions what could be causing this?

Your battery is on it's way out. If you can access the cells, check the level of your electrolyte.

I'm thinking the alt is going out.

The battery is 12.26V. This is a little less than 12.6,
possibly because the voltmeter is inaccurate or possibly because
the alternator has not been steady. The battery is 4 years old.
Originally rated at 800 CCA. Now down to 580 CCA. The shop manual
says that "Not Charging" comes from the altenator. It does not
    mention battery.

    ----------

    csbuckn,

Of course, the altenator is the first thing to consider. I suppose
my real question is: "Is it common for an altenator to degrade
gradually and fail intermittantly?" If so, I condemn the altenator.

But if altenators always either work, or not work, then the
light should stay on or off. If this is the case, I should
trust that the altenator is working and look for a loose
connection somewhere between the altenator and the dash
light. I do not want to replace the altenator unless I am
sure that the altenator is the problem.

There's another possibility to consider. A failing belt tensioner, causing the belt to slip on the alternator pulley, causing poor charging, causing low battery output.

    Jayoldschool,

Thank you for this tip. I had not considered it. It is definitely something I will have a look at. However, I do not hear a squeel that I usually associate with a slipping belt.

    Serp belts don't squeal.

I was thinking belt too, but I'm more familiar with the v-belts. last year I had a loos belt and I'd get the occasional charge light flicker with no belt squeal. I would check that the belt hasn't stretched past the range of travel for the tensioner.
But a battery sitting at 12.2 isn't great. I'd throw a charger on and check that it's capable of holding a good charge.

Your battery is four years old and how many times has it been discharged? A rule of thumb on a discharged battery 3 times and out.

A diode on the way out is usually indicated by a constant flickering of the indicator light.
