Here are actual pics of that rust.

Yes, I can use a lot of parts like front bumper, inner wheel well housing, bumper filler, engine+trans, all that little stuff like tv cable, wiring, plugs, ecc control panel, ecm, rims, wiper motor and a lot of other little things. Seats, front clip and other parts will be some nice decoration. Everything I can't use will be sold.
All in all the whole car was cheaper than the engine rebuilt of my broken HT4100.

    Wow, extra crunchy!

What a shame, looks like someone plastered it up at some point in the past, probably to sell it on.

Re: 1983 Fleetwood Brougham d'Elegance Project

    I got the engine running.

Furthermore repaired both power windows and the driver door panel. Why I've done this to a parts car? I have absolutely no idea... maybe this is a reflex to repair everything I see.

Wanted to do a test drive but the transmission says nothing. Oil is more than full. Transmission is brand new. The previous owner put in a new transmission but never got the car running. This is the first time for the transmission.
Anyone have an idea what to do?

    Regards
    Felix

Torque converter hooked up? Manual linkage hooked up? Is it shifting into gear at the tranny? Is the front pump working? Also have to wonder if the tranny was put together right. You can check the pump by disconnecting a cooler line and starting the motor, oil should pour out. Might wanna have a catch pan ready because the fluid should come out pretty fast.

Disconnected the cooler lines, started the engine and....... nothing! They were dry.
The torque converter is connected to the flywheel properly. The tc looks brand new so there were used all new parts. Maybe someone did something wrong while the overhaul...

Can't do anything, so I started to disassemble the Coupe.

    Felix

Damn, not much you can do. Make sure the TC is engaged in the tranny correctly and drop the pan to see if something is wrong.

Re: 1983 Fleetwood Brougham d'Elegance Project

Yes I will look what's wrong.

The engine is almost out. Only the exhaust and some minor stuff needs to be disconnected.
Hell, this car is crunchy! Every part, every bolt, every screw... what a mess... Fortunately plastic can't rust, I can use a lot of plastic trim for the Sedan.

    My acutal working place....

The front clip will be some very nice wall decoration. I will put some illumination into it.

Really rusty cars suck to work on, i pray the bolts snap so I don't have to fight every one. Too bad you don't have a hot wrench.
Looking good... You'll have it licked soon.

Yes you're right but working with a hot wrench under a rusty car is horrible too. All that rust is coming down.

    Pulled the Deville engine today.

Re: 1983 Fleetwood Brougham d'Elegance Project

2 HT4100 engines... the perfect moment of thinking about the choice of my hobby....

Here we go... disassembling the Coupe engine...
    passenger side... very clean

looks great but again there is oil in the head. Again the drain back holes are plugged. To every early HT4100 owner. Check it!!! 2 of 2 '83 HT4100 engines I own had plugged oil holes!

driver side is very dirty... but the holes are free.

    intake off... some dirt too.

power steering pulley is off. It was a hell. Had to take the crane to hold one end and work on the other side with maximum force.

the reason... there was a lot of rust on it.

    pulley is rusted inside too

uninstalled exhaust manifolds, power steering pump, vacuum pump, crank pulley

    uninstalled water pump

switched the oil pans of both engines because the Fleetwood one was perfect as the Coupe one was rusty. Startet to disassemble the Fleetwood engine too because I want to use a lot of parts of it.

Furthermore I painted the last rear bumper filler and installed it. The rear bumper is complete again and is ready for installing.

So far, so good Felix. Nice work. As a matter of interest, what do you estimate the mileage on the coupe to be. I would guess high because there sure is a lot of oil, grease and rust on the engine.

    Cheers.........R.

Glad to see the "HT 4100 Whisperer" rides again!

That really is an amazing discovery on the HT 4100 engine, it would be job one if I ever get another one, which I assume some day I will.

Every owner of one owes you a great debt for finding this out! Keep up the great work.

Re: 1983 Fleetwood Brougham d'Elegance Project

    @ Robin Banx,
the Coupe has 45.000 original miles. This is proven! I have the yearly documentary. I think this is a matter of how someone is taken care of the engine. It seems that I am the first one who is working that far on it. + I don't think that this HT engine made 145.000 miles without any repair.
My Sedan engine had it's damage at 31.000 original miles. But this was a matter of bad care too.

    @ talismandave,
thank you so much. I really appreciate that.

I was a bit lazy the last days. Today I only worked from 7-10 PM on it.
I took off the whole valve train and the intake manifold of the old (Sedan) engine because I want to use the intake on the new engine.
Usually you don't talk about your own dumb mistakes but I do! Look at that, the exhaust crossover restrictor plate slipped a bit.... It was not leaky and nothing damaged but I know for the future to put a spot engine sealant at it to hold it at it's position.

Put the "new" intake to the "old" engine. This is my parts engine.

Cleaned the new engine, turned it and took off the oil pan.

I really wanted to know how the shape of the front main bearing is....

GREAT! Looks almost like new. I am really satisfied about that. So this engine is definately a good HT engine.
The camshaft is looking good too. Absolutely no wear. Like that!!!
The timing chain needs definately to be replaced. It is very loose.

    Best Regards from Germany
    Felix

Great work, Felix. I'll be sure to clear out the drain back holes on mom's 84 when I do valve cover gaskets. Love those chrome rocker covers!

Re: 1983 Fleetwood Brougham d'Elegance Project

Somewhere I read that the '84-on HT engines had bigger oil drain back holes but I don't know exactly. But it is definately a good idea to check that.
Good luck for open drain holes. If they are clogged the whole valve train has to be uninstalled and 2 cylinder head bolts per side have to be pulled. Not a nice kind of work.
But to be honest, leaky valve cover gaskets are a sign of clogged holes.

I am not a fan of chrome covers. Like the '84-on more.

Changed all crank and connection rod bearings.
Furthermore painted the last rear bumper filler and completed the rear end. First time since I bought the car with intact fillers.

The filler under the license plate will be switched too soon. The parts car had a good one.
