77 CDV Dechroming update/ readying for paint

I just got the windshield trim off, drilled out the trunk lock cover, and took the upper grill piece off.

Looks like all that is left is the mirrors, and trim around the windows. This means pulling panels, which I hate doing because causing a rattle freaks me out, but I suppose it is for the greater good.
I bought the special took for the door panel removal, and was wondering if anyone has any tips to share before I dig in. Maybe hidden screw locations or mirror removal tips.

Thanks for all the info and help!
    Tom.

The thing you have to worry about is the window trim, you're probably gonna break some clips. Mirror is easy, just two bolts. Is it a power or manual mirror?

Manual, I am not looking forward to breaking clips, but it looks like I have no choice, there is some rust under there that needs attention.
I guess I will be careful, and try to get whatever clips I need, I know finding some of them can be near impossible.

    Thanks,
    Tom

The right side mirror has a cable that goes through the door, into the car and behind the dash. The adjustment knob is connected to the mirror and doesnt unplug from it. I believe you can access the cable if youtake the dashpad off.

Thanks, I'll give the dashpad a good cleaning while I have it off.

The cable is not accessible when removing the dash pad. You'll have to remove the center trim where the radio is to access it. And I believe also behind the glove box liner has to be removed so you can guide it out when pulling it from the door. It's a little P.I.T.A. but eventually, it'll come out. csbuckn is right, only two screws but you'll have to remove door panel to gain access thru the door for them.
You're lucky your driver side mirror isn't a thermometer equipped one because that has a fiber optic cable that connects to the back side of the speedometer to illuminate it. That would have to come out just to remove clip, otherwise, if you cut it, it won't illuminate no more..

I wanna say that wire runs from the center console up to behind the defrost vents so I think you are gonna have to take the dashpad off but I'll look at some pics on my 84 thread. I just took mine off and I think it was up high but I took so much stuff off, I'm not 100 on that.

Always be careful of hidden screws in door panels. Usually each end of the pull strap, usually one behind the pull handle, and sometimes one under the window switches. If the panel isn't pulling away from the door easily (after pulling all those darts around the perimeter) you most likely have another screw in there somewhere.

I don't worry about breaking trim clips because I always end up needing a few new ones anyway and then just end up replacing all of them.

Depending on the pull strap style you have, you can have 2 under the ends of the vinyl strap or 2 under the ends of the metal pull handle. Sometimes they also put one or 2 behind the woodgrain switch panel (bolting the armrest frame to the door)

Nice job so far. So with the rear trunk lock emblem was it just rivets holding it on? On mine somebody must have already replaced it because it's held in by screws.

Here is a pic of the mirror cable routing. Kinda hard to see but it looks like the glove box may be the way to go. The black cable that goes up behind the defrost vent and back down.

Is there a dent in the Driver door? You may be able to pop it back out with the door panel off.

Door handles come off too. Need 1/4" drive deep well socket for that too.

Are you repainting this yourself or using a shop. You should be able to get the pinstripe decals from a body works supply store. The stripes make nice accents to the body lines.
