    beginning 1991 cadillac brougham project

Hello from a new member, I admire the information provided by this site in the past and chose to join today. I currently own a 1991 Brougham with a tbi 350, all in all wonderful shape minus faded paint and wear and tear. She's been pulled off the road now and sits on stands in the garage after
302,000 miles of saving my ass. Its well cared for and needs mostly a new engine (still runs but obviously tired) suspension overhaul, and paint. I'll even include picks of her haydays and current. Unfortunatley a California resident I was curious on who was brave enough to accomplish engine swaps under smog laws and such. Suddenly an LT1 follower. Any info is appreciated thanx!

Welcome. That may be the most miles I've heard of, most I've seen is 274K. You put all the miles on the car? The pics dont work but I'm sure they will come.

Yeah, I was excited to post all the pics and suddenly they're too many kb for the uploads, Im only working with the app on my phone which isn't bad. I wasn't the only owner of the car, but it was my only transportation off and on for 5 years and commuted 80-120 miles a day for my work, sometimes farther. First losing the ability to smog, then the front end was just way to loose so I pulled it off the road and started disassembling her a few months back for paint, suspension, and new engine. Interior is perfect and body is straight. The pics are coming!

Exciting! Looks like a cool project, welcome to the forum! Has it been fully repainted already? Lack of the Brougham script & pinstripes made me wonder. also, what size tires were you running on it? Back ones look a bit narrow, like maybe a 205-75? I'm a detail guy

So are you going to do a stock engine, or swap for an LT1 / other engine? I have a '90 Brougham that looks much like yours, including the 350. Great cars as you know! Be sure to keep us updated!

Long before joining I was researching threads over and over for either 383 ported tbi, tpi conversions all the way to 5.3 LS back to LT1 numerous times just cuz I want something a little funner. I used to own a tpi L98 trans am, rebuilt a few LT1s in school then graduating to my 30s now have a tired tbi 350 which is quite slower. Again I am trying to get famliar with engine swapping in California over the whole getting it inspected thing. I was always partial to LT1s over Tpi and Tbi and got inspired after finding threads on people putting them into older 4100 cars and blah. Yeah she has magnaflow dual exhaust and yeah those are 205/75/15s that are now flat and bald. Engine still has life but in the morning it doesn't and she dumps quite a bit of oil in the intake. I haven't painted it yet, decided that will come last. ....... Want it lower too

I asked a friend of mine about engine swaps into FWBs. He said he heard they were legal if you put in something clean and modern like an LSx powertrain. The emissions would be cleaner than your stock engine and for cases like this where it's a win-win for you AND the state you can ask some sort of inspector/referee to approve it.

Obviously inspector wouldn't be too happy to see a 472 or 500 carb going into your car.

Let us know what you learn. Many people here talk about engine swaps but not many seem to make it all the way through.

    Good luck!

Welcome! That is a nice looking car. I'm curious-how much maintenance did your car require to reach 300,000 miles? Do you still have the original tranny and rear end? The California climate sure is kind to older cars. If you don't wreck them, and continue to maintain them, cars out there will last forever.

Yeah it sports the original tranny, and rear end which I maintained changing filter and fluids myself, the water hoses wore out twice, I coaxed the radiator to last until I pulled it all apart lol it started separating in places I couldn't really explain. And the original fuel pump died months before I parked it. Again it ran very well but she wouldn't smog anymore and the oil in the intake was just getting worse, pcv valves and even the air filter was just getting soaked with oil so I was buying them weekly.

Pricing Lsx engines have been less likely cuz I've never seen one in these older styles nor have I found threads. I figured that inspectors want to see a same year or newer engine with same displacement retaining all smog equipment as if the car came stock with it.

Donor cars with lsx engines DO NOT last around here, as soon as you see one.... Its gone, Broughams in junk yards here get stripped entirely within the first day or two so these are starting to become very rare.

I've been to California several times, and it seems engine rebuilders are everywhere. As nice as your car is, and as thoroughly as you seem to be re building it, have you thought about a rebuilt motor? You know, for the next 300,000 miles?
