Yeah. This is how I restored my present steering wheel: http://www.cadillacforums.com/forums...oration-8.html

I have to say that talismandave has improved my method with that wood trim and I think it takes no more work than the way I did it

If you knew how shaky I was in the months I was working on it it would be more impressive! That is why I waited to fix the stripe tape. Thanks for the compliments.
I will probably pick up another one to restore at the yard next time I go. I know the second one would be better, and an old cracked wheel would cost me nothing!(plus I haven't returned my puller to the hardware store yet for a refund!)

I wish I could find my wheel puller. Theres an old school racing wheel in an 80s conversion van I've had my eye on (needs a new wheel cover though)

Three 5/16 coarse bolts and a gate hinge is all you need!

The DAP website doesn't list the wood trim product. Out of production?

Judging by the packaging, I'd put that dap wood trim package in the 80s.

So get a bit of veneer from the local hardware store. Bit of stain, exacto knife, and off you go.

I talked to a guy on layitlow that said he used a woodgrain adhesive sheet that he picked up from an rv supply store and cut it into a circle. It looked pretty good.

    Re: Oh wretched steering wheel

Yeah that veneer was an antique when I started at the store ten years ago! I got the last one. The advantage of working at a store that celebrated it's 100th anniversary this weekend. Lots of cool old "one of" junk laying around when you need it! There was nothing nothing special about it. It was just thin wood veneer. I don't know about other years but the 74's wheel had a decal of wood grain in it where all the grain ran toward the center of the wheel. That is what I was trying to recreate in wood. A circle cut out of contact paper would have been easier and would look as good. I just had to over complicate it. Too cleaver by half!

Thatīs exactly what I did, but you have to carefully fill cracks with filler before. At first I thought I could find some thin wood sheet but someone supposedly very professional in wood craftmanship told me it was impossible to do, so I took all plastic covering wood veneer out and filled the groove with filler, painted the rim and then applied the woodgrain adhesive... Dave has proved that wood filling was POSSIBLE, but if you want to do it the easy way, just fill some cracks, paint and apply adhesive... Not sure how thermal expansion and contraction will affect different materials playing with filler. After one year mine is as good as the first day.

Yeah it even surprised me how many they had there when I went the first time. Now that the temps are down and I am re-energized I will have to get out there to look for a few goodies, including a rear view mirror for a friend! Let's hope.
