    Car won't hold charge

For a couple days my car battery was dead every time I wanted to go somewhere. I would charge it and then the next time it would be dead again. So I took it to my auto shop and they tested it and said that the alternator wasn't charging the battery. It was at 12 volts originally and when I started the car it didn't go up at all. So I pulled out the alternator and took it to the store and they ran it through their test and said it actually passed all of their tests. So I put the alternator back in and bought a new battery.

It started right up and I was driving for probably 10 mins before the battery completely died on me. So I thought there still has to be something wrong with this damn alternator. I took it out on the spot and got picked up, bought a new alternator and intalled it. Same problem. Brand new battery and alternator and it still will not hold a charge. What else could it be? The battery terminals are clean and I am positive that everything was installed properly. Getting ver annoyed with this car

If the battery is new and the alternator is new and good and it is still not charging it has to be a connection or a bad wire...I would first look at the plug that plugs into the alt. and check or change the alt. output wire that goes to the batt. this is , most of the time, a heavy red wire.. I think they are a number 10 wire.. If this wire burns out =no charge.... The plug that powers the alt, if thats not making a good conection=no charge.... When you find it you will say Look there is that SOB...

Measure the voltage across the battery terminals with the car off, and on. Post the numbers.

The car just died out of nowhere after 10 minutes while you were driving? It's probably something else causing the problem like a bad connection somewhere because unless both the battery and the alternator die at the same time it'll keep running.

A brand new battery, even with no charge from the alternator, would last more than 10 minutes. It sounds like a connection (like brougham) suggested - and a big one at that. Make sure the ground is securely attached to the block, and the positive connections are securely attached to the starter and alternator. Also makes sure that the terminals are securely connected to the battery cable.

    Just throwing this out there.
You are dealing with your 90 Brougham with stock set up right?
if you're not and talking about an older car then the voltage regulator would be separate from the alternator and highly suspect.

    Re: Car won't hold charge

Going to be checking the wires today. If I remember correctly the plug goung into the alternator looked a questionable but it alsways ran fine before and I haven't done anything to it. Before I bought the new battery I tested the voltage when the car was off was 12 and it did not go up when the car was turned on, which is what led me to believe it was a alternator in the first place. Intersesting about the voltage regulator, could that cause something like what I am dealing with? I would jump the car and it would run with some pressure on the gas but only when I was in park. Usually when I shifted into drive it died out.

    Re: Car won't hold charge

Voltage regulators became internal to the alternator sometime mid to late 70's. So if it's your 90 that your having the problems with, the voltage regulator would have been replaced when you replaced the alternator.

I'm not sure on a '90 but a few years older would give the same problem is the charging lamp in the dash were burned out.

The lamp was in series with the regulator.
    csbuckn and csbuckn like this.

My '87 Buick was that way...not sure how many years after they continued that circuitry.
