Have anyone repaired an old stereo (1970)?

When I tune my radio to any AM station, it works loud and clear. But when on FM stations, nothing comes out of the speakers, but receiver itself produces very silent voice/music.
Anyone had any luck at repairing an old stereo?
Just thought I'd ask here first before I disassemble it, maybe there's a simple fix.

My '69 AM/FM radio just emits an electric crack noise when you turn it on. AM/FM switch seems not to work. Speakers seem to be toast. The owner (an old man) of the upholstery shop where my 69 is now has told me his brother can check if he can fix it as he has an autosound shop nearby. When he has it checked I will try to get some info and post it. By now all I can advice when you open it is checking all wire connections and looking for rust on some of them due to damp. Check also antenna connection.

Do you have the AM/FM stereo or the AM/FM mono radio?

I don't know, I guess stereo, how do I check? The car had four speakers, two in the dash and two in the back.

If the car has four speakers, it's a stereo car. The FM dial should also have a lighted "STEREO" indicator when a stereo FM station is tuned in. First off is to check your amplifier, located under the dash behind and to the left of the glove box. If that's shot, the FM radio will behave much as you describe, but AM will come in perfectly (ask me how I know). Other than that, you would have to check connections inside the radio itself, which is something I would leave to a professional.

I've used www.videoservicestop.com to rebuild my OEM stock radios in past with success. About the price of a new modern headunit for repair/rebuild.
