Re: 1984 Coupe DeVille Engine Swap!

I'M BAAAAAACK!!! And I have pictures!

My TV Cable Bracket and Throttle Cable Bracket, fresh from JEGS.

This is the adapter that bolts to my carb flange. It's what the TV cable hooks to, and how all the shifts will be controlled. I need to get either another carb spacer or a thicker one. I can't install this piece yet, because it hits where the EGR valve would go. I'll be heading to the speed-shop tomorrow to look for a suitable spacer.

I painted the heater-core pipe so it matches the engine. This came from the 307. Why is there a vacuum line connector on the back? The one from the HT4100 didn't have that. I'd have just used the one from the HT, but it's too small.

    So... Much... Scraping...

I need that oil filter housing...

The housing came off once the exhaust came off. There was so much rust. Three of the bolts came out, one snapped off, and the last one didn't come out. If you look closely, the whole front of the manifold cracked and split! That bolt stayed in (with a chunk of manifold), and the the rest was pushed out of the way. Either way, I got the filter housing off.

Also, just about all of the other parts got painted today!

Tomorrow I think the Olds will get the accessories put on it and I'll see if I can get the engine mounts off of the HT and test-fit them to the 350.

    It's good to be back.

BEAUTIFUL. Krylon makes a paint for plastics that works really well on that flunky (FLUNKY not "Funky") intake hose that connects to the air cleaner housing...and that hose is just oh-so-fun to degrease too.

^That intake hose is actually in REALLY good shape. I found it at the junkyard and it might have been free. I was just using it to prop up the air cleaner housing so the bottom could dry.

Didn't look like it matched up. Yeah, those pieces tend to last forever.

Don't you love free Junkyard things? I made it out with a whole back-pack full last time.

When I go to the Junkyard, I always set things in a pile thats mine. When done I get whoever and show him what I have. I may dicker for the price if I feel he's hitting the high side. If you walk out with undeclared goods and found out,, you will not find yourself welcomed back.
One person who is lighthanded makes us all suspect, and yards will raise prices or close the gates and leave part selection to a yardman.
I know a few guys who are banned from some of the local yards.

the vacuum port on the heater control is to let coolant into your heater core. Its controlled by a vacuum line coming from the firewall(on a car with a stock 307). Vacuum is applied when you turn on the heat and it opens the valve to let the coolant to the heater core. If you want to use the 4100 heater stuff, can you get a thread reducer? I got one from ACE for a temp sensor and it works fine.

Re: 1984 Coupe DeVille Engine Swap!

^Thanks for the tip, CS. I have to go to the hardware store anyway. And Dullahan, when I said free, I meant they just gave it to me. Smaller or odd plastic parts they will sometimes tell you to just keep.

I also have a question regarding the oil filter housing. Is there supposed to be a gasket between that and the block? Or is it just metal on metal? I REALLY don't want to get it full of oil and have it spray everywhere. I have several types of RTV, if that can be used.

    Thanks guys!

Often, machined parts are metal on metal when assembled at the factory. Can't hurt to skin it with gasket maker, though.

True, but I am fairly certain that the junkyards (or at least the one I went to) is not particularly concerned with handfuls of fuses or bulk lengths of aftermarket wire.

Re: 1984 Coupe DeVille Engine Swap!

    PROGRESS!!!

I got (most) of the accessories on today! Three more bolts and the alternator and the power steering pump are completely done! That 307 has been invaluable for parts and references for part placement.

I also got the crank pulley and the oil filter housing on. I asked about the oil filter housing earlier, about whether it needed a gasket or not. Turns out I had a new gasket for it the whole time! So yes, it is metal on metal from the factory, but if you take it off they do make gaskets for it.

    PICTURES!

Does anybody have a picture of the AC bracket configuration for the Olds 307? I took mine apart to clean and paint it, and have since forgotten how to put it back together.

    More updates tomorrow!
