1969 Calais Sedan - Officail restoration thread! (With Pictures!)

Weather is getting pretty nice up here in Maine and I've decided to start work on the '69 Calais next weekend. I went up to look at it again this past weekend and took some pictures. Click to enlarge...

That's where she sat all winter...

My favorite picture...but the grill trim is cracked. Anyone know where I can get replacement?

This weekend I'm going to have to pull the engine to redo the exhaust manifolds. Will also give me a chance to clean it up and repaint the block

    More pictures as I go.

The grille trim on the leading edge of the hood cracks on the 1969 and 1970 as a matter of principle. You could repair or replace the part, but it will just crack again. Replacement parts come up on e-bay all the time.

Looking forward to following the work!

^^^Precisely! Be proud of the history that your car has. Yeah, it may be a little worn out, but just think of the stories it could tell. Trust in your car. We love works-in-progress.

That looks like a great project car, can't wait to see your progress! I always loved the front end of the '69s.

You might be in luck outsider, I'm going to be parting out my '70 Deville this summer and I pass through Portland once a month or so. Last time I checked the rear quarters were still very nice. I've had my eye on one locally to restore but I have too much on my plate right now.

Re: 1969 Calais Sedan - Officail restoration thread! (With Pictures!)

Spent yesterday pulling the engine...Here are some pics.

Took the hood off...man that was heavy.

Big ol' Alice Chalmer tractor to pull the engine.

Engine is huge, had to coax it away from the radiator frame thing

    It's going up

    Up

    And away

And now the engine is out....

God what a huge engine. The tractor couldn't hold it up. They hydrolics kept slipping back down.

    Best engine hoist ever!

I'm tempted to pull my 368 to clean it up. Needs a water pump and a couple of manifold bolts, so it would be worth it...

So, are you going to rebuild the engine as a 500?

You can keep the bore as it is (at 4.3in). You just need to increase the stroke to 4.304in (over the stock 4.06in).

You might as well do something with it being it's out.

Good going....nice to have a tractor on site I guess.
