The trans rebuild on my FWD '88 Fleetwood was $1400 and it takes several hours in labor just to get it out of the car. Its way easier to get it out of a RWD car.

I'm sorry I'm so late on this post. If your trans is bad, the fluid would have a definite odor to it. I can't describe it, but it's something like a cross between burnt toast, hot brakes, and cooked oil. The whine your hearing is your pump cavitating. Your filter is clogged and it is probably from your disk material.
If there is metal in your pan, you've got the plates and disks down to metal to metal. You can usually see evidence of this in the fluid. The fluid will be dark and you will see both dark particles and metal chips in it.
You can get a TH400 made up by JET or other trans specialists for around $1100. |

If you were closer to me, I have a working used TH400 I could sell you. Check salvage yards. You should be able to get one for $400. You can use one from a Buick, Pontiac or Olds. The Pontiac's used a stiffer spring under the pressure control valve in their performance models, so the shifts would be a little harder. | | Cadillac Discussion Tools | | |
