Ugh, forget that. Those older Cadillac Broughams are so cheap now, why even bother with the "lesser" B bodies?

Very cheap. I found one with 29,000 miles on it for $2,900. It looked immaculate. Even though it's slower than molasses, I think I like the '87-'89 more. They look classier and have the old 70s look. The composite headlights don't look as nice as the old ones either. Plus, the grid grille and everything. I could spend a little more money on upgrading it to better its performance.

Well, as far the performance goes, you can't change the 307 at all....aftermarket support for the 307 is nil. You'd have to swap the engine out to change that at all. The most common swap from a 307 is to another Oldsmobile engine...the 403.

I thought as much, but a 403 Olds. That's huge! 6.6 L! Wasn't that the same engine that went into the Trans Am. How much do you think an engine swap will put me in the hole?

403 was used in the Trans Ams...along with the 1977-78 Toronado, 1977-79 Ninety Eight/Eighty Eight and their Buick counterparts.

Meh...I think I'll just go with the tree-fitty. I even know small block Chevy's are cheap as dirt to mod.

Easiest way is a 90-92 or a 93 for a non-LT1 350, but you already knew that. Basically you need to decide if powertrain or body style is more important to you.

Powertrain. I don't have loads of money to mod these older cars even though they're beautiful, no doubt, but the '90-'92 Broughams with the 5.7 L seems to be the best deal. Reliable, good looking, comfortable, chrome-laden, 300 lb/ft of torque, good gas mileage and cheap to repair/modify. Not to mention it's a Cadillac. Maybe when I get older, I'll get the '71 Eldorado I want so bad. That'll be a nice sleeper.

Re: '87-'92 Cadillac Brougham first car

Holy shit. When I was 17, I would have killed for a '71 Eldorado (mainly for the looks and high compression 8.2L), but I knew it wouldn't be a sensible choice at my age and income level, so I decided to look for a newer big Cadillac...hence the Brougham. But I "settled" for the Roadmaster and eventually moved into the deVille.

    Smart minds think alike.

Re: '87-'92 Cadillac Brougham first car

The L05 was an optional engine from 90-92. From 91-92, the L03 was the base engine, which many people on here will tell you does a fine job of pushing the Brougham around. 93 was L05 only. I'd insist on an L05. Never driven anything but my L05 Caprice 9C1 (which was 205hp stock), though. Well my dad had a 91 Olds Custom Cruiser wagon for a few years, with the L03 (same 170hp as the Brougham). A Brougham is only a touch lighter and while the part throttle acceleration felt adequate in the wagon, it had nothing left if you put the pedal down.

One thing not often discussed is why the 90 and 91 L05 Broughams have lower EPA mileage estimates than the 92.
    The 90 was 14/21.
    The 91 was 15/22.
    The 92 and 93 were 16/25.

    And while we're on mileage, the 92 L03 was 17/25 while the 91 was 16/25. The 90 307 was 16/24.

A 92 Caprice 9C1 with the L05 and 3.42 rear was 14/20, and I assume my 93 is the same. What's weird is the 90 Brougham is almost just as bad and I don't think that had anything shorter than 2.93 or 3.08 and maybe even 2.56...

The 90 brougham with towing package came with 3.23's I believe.

Re: '87-'92 Cadillac Brougham first car

I do believe that the 1991 and 92 350's had a slightly modified camshaft, among other things, which would lead to the difference in MPG.
